…or get a life!
Yes, all that but not completely true for each. There is a context. You can globally like something but want to change a particular thing in it. Nothing strange for that.
Yes, I don’t like to be moderated. Because you like it ?
It is not ‘enjoying’ being moderated but accepting that on the whole, moderation keeps this forum the generally pleasant and respectful place that it is. Moderation is for the greater good of the community rather than the individual. But like government really
Yes but moderation only work when there is an agreed moderator. Else you have random people flapping when they see no hifi.
No need to over complicate it… some great pictures and discussions on this thread. I simply scroll down when there is more text that I can cope with until I reach the next picture.
I see a picture and sometimes it drives a question / comment, don’t see a issue with that.
Gary
What do you think of the RME?
Wot no sox ?
We have an agreed moderator so it works
I prefer moderation to the chaos I have seen in other places, and which I no longer bother to visit. The moderation here is light and fair, and keeps the quality high.
Hi @Ian2001, I find the RME DAC very competent and neutral in that it doesn’t impart any strong colouration to the sound, I can only reasonably compare it to what I have at the moment, including an Audio Note DAC One, Chord Mojo and the DAC in my SuperUniti, I would say that it is more resolving than the others and in direct comparison to the DAC/pre in the SU, the SU sounds slightly rolled off in the high frequencies to me.
I bought the RME mainly as an alternative to a Naim Preamp and to use the EQ which is performed by DSP, I have found this very handy to temper the bass resonances of my room. The trick seems to be to use it in moderation. Once you start ‘playing’ with the parametric EQ it is tempting to over do it.
As for replacing the ‘approved’ preamp in the system, I think the RME drives the NAP300DR very well. A number of my previous preamp replacement trials, including the Chord TT2, (recommended by my Naim dealer), sounded highly resolving, but somehow lacking dynamics when used to drive the NAP directly. Perhaps I needed a bit more time with the Chord which was on short term loan at the time. I fear part of the issue was that I had got used to the slightly exaggerated sound of my SU>NAP300 combination.
As far as I can see, the RME is one of a small number of products, (MiniDSP do some interesting devices too), working as a competent DAC with sophisticated EQ functions, headphone amp and digital volume control which to my ears drives the NAP quite successfully. Hope this helps.
I agree. I tend to skim over the comments and read any points or topics of interest to me, then move to the next pic.
One thing which may make thread more interesting is a picture of the rest of the room maybe from the system end of the room and maybe room dimensions etc. This would sometimes give the system more context and add some additional information. I appreciate some may not wish to add these images for various reasons. Just a thought.
Gary, everything is fine, as you say, so long as people stay generally on topic. As Eoin said above - a bit of chat related to a picture, maybe the odd question, a sock here and there for fun - leads to a healthy balance.
When I first looked after the thread it all bumbled along fine, with good pictures and some friendly conversation. More recently there have been a few members who seem to feel that rules don’t apply, or at least not to them. Last year the thread was inundated with pictures gathered from the internet, which started to dominate. People got fed up with it, they were all removed and this year I started the thread with the gentle ‘feel free to post pictures of your system’. It’s been very successful and the need for requests to stay on topic has been very low.
I think it would be a great shame if it was to become a ‘post whatever stuff you like’ thread. If people want to use it like Twitter then that’s possible in the Padded Cell. Even then, a thread in the cell with ostensibly no topic has been guided back by the OP far more than I have guided this thread. Ideally it would be entirely self moderating and if some didn’t consistently try to push the boundaries no intervention would be required, from Richard, me, or anyone else.
It’s worth remembering that Naim is one of the world’s top hifi brands and this forum is read by far more people than actually post here. This thread is one of the long running and perhaps ‘flagship’ threads if you like and some decent standard does need to be maintained. Perhaps I take it too seriously and a bit of anarchy might be beneficial, but I’m not too sure.
I’ve come in for some rather too personal comments this year, hence my stepping back from guiding it. I do actually rather enjoy it and would be happy to continue if it wasn’t for a few shouting ‘forum police’ and similar if I try to guide it back on track. The Naim Forum isn’t Twitter or Instagram and it’s all the better for it I feel.
Don’t forget the occasional pet. They can make a huge difference.
A really nice, tight system there - may I ask what the speakers and the source are ?
Many thanks, if I make an upgrade it is likely to be that. There are on-line comparisons of that with the Chord Qutest -and it does very well for less money.
A pic thread with a separate thread cross referencing the post number to the pic wanting to be discussed would keep things very neat and tidy.
If tidy is what’s wanted…
How’s this combo? Thinking about upgrading from LS50 to Vela.
It’s always been the case that if people want specific advice it’s far better to start their own thread rather than asking a random question in System Pics, which may or may not get answered. A long discussion of a particular issue is also pretty boring for those whose interest is in the pictures. You’ll note guidance to that effect in the opening post.
Thank you, the chain is PC-DAC V1-NAP100-Neat Motive SX3. Sounds pretty amazing to my ear.
