I did experiment with various distances and settled on current set up as it sounded good and imaged well. Then cables were routed through walls and so I cannot move them more the 1 foot each even if I wanted to. Also the Real Music Company the local naim dealer in Wellington agreed it was good distance and no need to move. They image well and sound good.
I read somewhere that there is a magic ratio of your listening position being 1.8x the distance that the speakers are apart. I measured my room at is just so happened to be exactly that, purely by accident. Iāve read also of an equilateral triangle being best. So long as it worksā¦
The magic ratio does seem to work well in my case. Also, I think the Ovators are known to disperse sound quite widely and may not be quite as sensitive to placement as other speakers. Thanks very much for your advice of a year ago advising on getting a higher top Fraim level, it certainly has helped with the cable dressing and getting the 555Dr transformer away from the 272. All these tweaks must have a cumulative effect on sound quality and my system has never sounded better.
A loaner Rega P3 with Dynavector 10X5 while I await the installation of the refurbished Troika in the LP12.
Thanks, I never knew that Iāll have the chance to have his gear. Still completely blowed away by the sound of the naim. I still have way more to improve, I plan to save up and buy a pair of dynaudio next time.
But the bottle tops top it off for me
My god you guys miss nothing. They now have metal discs under them.
And as your uncle has proven, a communicable disease as well!
Enjoy your kit and more importantly, enjoy the music!
Yes! A communicable disease.
Definitely will enjoy my system.
Nice turntable - high tech indeed.
Looking through this new thread for 2020 I realised that I havenāt yet posted a picture of my system this year. So here it is, looking a little tidier than usual, post Fraim rebuild, and in the midst of a Steely Dan LP sort-out (note to self - always need more Steely Dan!)ā¦
Well, whatās the best version you have of Countdown then?
So far, I think the prize goes to a very early UK Probe. However, itās totally mint, so that may have some bearing on things. A slightly later UK Probe in not quite as nice condition (but would still rate a VG+ maybe even a N/M) is not as good and very like a UK black label ABC. The big disappointment is the Japanese pressing. Clean and beautifully pressed but lacks something important.
And what about āthe big boyā NAP250?
Just out of curiosity, Richard, do you keep all of them or just the ones which you think have the best SQ? I do tend to get rid of ārepeatsā and very rarely, for sentimental reasons mainly, keep them all such as three copies of Disraeli Gears(two stereo, one mono).
Truth to tell Tony, Iām not so good at the āget ridā part.
Thatās a great setup Richard. Love the R2R
Iāve said it before, but a reel-to-reel tape player is about the sexiest thing you can have in a system.
Iād like to see a photo of all the other stuff you are not currently using. (The Richard Dane Audio Museum.)
PS - looks like you are a little short on copies of SD Countdownā¦
Hi Richard, have you still got SL2s? ATB Peter
Yes Peter, I still have a pair of SL2s.
