Major upgrade today saw a NAP 250 DR join my recently purchased NAC 282 (using my SN2 as a power amp). It sounds magnificent
Happy days and nights
Wonderful. I was amazed at how much more the 250 DR brings over the SN2 as a power amp when I swapped mine over. Enjoy.
Yeah seems to just be richer, beefier and more depth. The SN2 was great in Power Amp mode with the 282 though - I was really impressed by it.
Is this Panasonic DP-UB9000?
Hi Richard,
I assume it was my harmless post that caused the problems here.
I am sorry for the inconvenience it must have caused you but am relieved to see that you have left it & the subsequent posts (including all those showing 100% support of my post) intact.
Like me, I trust you could find nothing at all wrong/incorrect with it &, as some commented, it was merely intended to offer a very light hearted comment &, looked at every way I can, still appears to do just that & no more.
Out with the old and in with the… older.
Nait 1 has made way for the 42 & 160 with a NAT 101 to fill the shelf space. Snaps is powering both the tuner and the preamp and for a system for causal listening with the family it ticks all the boxes!
The family possibly don’t know this but they are ‘having it large’!
My partner always tells me when she thinks something sounds “off” which lays down the gauntlet for me to figure out what that means and then fix it.
What I’ve learnt is she is very sensitive to phase distortion, even without knowing what it actually is
Another father/son project for this weekend. A pair of open baffle full range speakers built to run-in the new drivers (I intend to make some Omega inspired speakers with them next year).
Anyway, the drivers are SB Acoustics SB20FRPC30-8 8 inch full rangers. They are 92db, 8 ohm and they present a very easy load to any amplifier. The baffles are 40cm x 100cm x 18 mm thick pine from B & Q. We finished assembling them this morning and have had them ‘running in’ all day which has made a big difference. There is no doubt potential for tweaking/finishing the speakers but not yet!
Partnered with an Arcam A18 they are a fantastic match - the Arcam can sound a little ‘flat’ with some speakers but definitely not with these and it only needs to be on low volume. The speakers have a very open mid and treble and voices/instruments all appear in different spaces behind the speakers. True they are a little bass light (though getting better) but the Arcam has very subtle and completely noiseless tone controls that, when set to +3 out of 8 for bass, make all the difference.
Was just about to say, head on, they remind me of my Omega Junior 8 XRS.
I think Decware also have downloadable plans for building all their single driver speakers too. Not free but peanuts. Though the Omega designs are a bit more small room friendly.
I’m using UB9000 as DVD and occasional CD transport.Like the way it recognises type of media inserted and then switch itself to HDMI/Sonos output when DVD is playing or to Digital coaxial
/Nova output when CD is playing.
Thank you. Having worked out the box volume on WinISD it is the Junior 8 XRS that I am going to try to ‘replicate’ - I have read your write up on them with your Luxman set which was very interesting. My build will have veneered front and rear panels but painted sides and will stand roughly 90cm tall + the base.
Going back to the OB speakers, I can imagine they could be a bit much with forward sounding amplification but with the Arcam (and no doubt tube amplifiers) they seem just right. The aforementioned bass control adjustment has eliminated any need for additional woofers, at least in my small office. If I were to peruse OB further then an additional pair of SB audience 12 inch OB woofers driven by a plate amplifier with variable crossover and phase would be the next addition.
I was hoping that it was down because Naim were going to show some pictures from their listening room with - products not seen on these pages before…
Just got the 250DR myself. I knew it was going to be wow but in the home environment it really is in a different league to the power amp in my Uniti Nova. Quite remarkable really .
You probably weren’t the only one Ian.
It’s been a faithful servant for just shy of 30 years Ian.
Fully serviced and rewired in 2016 with a Goldring 1042 MM, I’ve been very pleased with its continuing performance.
Listening to it now as it happens, due to the BB being particularly bad at the moment and leaving what little band width to my wife as she’s working from home today.
