Tell us about your journey with headphones

It seems that headphones are very much back in fashion and it made me stop and reflect on what I have experienced. I share this only to see how others have arrived at their choices for high end listening today.

As a teenager in the 1970’s I spent my hard earned few pounds on a pair of Koss closed back headphones in Lasky’s, very suitable for late night listening to my growing collection of C90 cassette tapes. Then came a Sony walkman (1979) with a huge step up in quality, a Walkman Pro (1987) and and over years of travelling portable CD players (1990’s), Mini Disc players (1995 ish, and very underated) and inevitably iPod’s (2001 onwards). With these portable devices the headphones were part of the package, and quality was pretty good in general.

I always used headphones for discreet listening so as not to annoy others, especially when travelling which I did a lot of, and to be frank I have been astonished at how good the latest generation of in ear headphones can be. I have used the full range of Apple and some Sony (dodgy bluetooth connectivity) and they are fine but not really high end.

About 10 years ago, after complaints from my kids about my music I purchased some Sennheiser HD800 open backed headphones plus a Naim headphone amp and hoped to enjoy more private listening. The Sennheisser headphones are fantastic, but not private! The radiate high frequency fizz to anybody else in the room and that rather defeated the purpose of having them, as by choice I would rather listen on speakers! So they are used from time to time, but rarely for extended listening.

More recently I find myself with several places to listen and have a number of systems to use. Th HD800 remain with my main system (details in my profile) and I have headphones in two other Naim set up’s one with a Uniti Atom the other with a Uniti Star. Due to the sound leakage issue I have elected for closed back headphones, with the Star Focal Elegia and with the Atom Mezze Audio 99 classics.

There is no doubt that if you spend more you get big step up in quality of sound, and both the Star and Atom can reveal this difference easily, however the law of diminshing marginal returns applies here. I tried Focal Stellia and Clear Mg before electing for the Elegia, partly because as an obsolete model they are avaialble at a very good price just now. For the Atom I auditioned a range of £200-500 models and elected for the Mezze.

So what have I concluded?

For me close back is the only option at home as with headphones I want to listen privately. Whilst I have high end headphones in the HD 800 I could have saved quite a bit of money by not buying them as they really annoy people in the same or adjacent rooms! Sound is fab though!

There are some incredibly good headphones out there and not all at prices to break the bank. I am not a huge fan of Focal products as a rule but the Elegia are very well made, comfortable and a very enjoyable listen and, whilst the Stelia and Clear Mg were better the differences were pretty fine: all three could do with a longer standard cable though! I auditioned others, too many to record and as prices rose so the differences became smaller and harder to justify.

The Mezze get used quite a bit being in an apartment. They were inexpensive (£150ish) and do not have the same quality feel as the Focal, but if I am honest they do the job very well and I have no complaints. That said I will probably buy something better.

And for travel? Apple Airpods do a great job, brilliant packaging, almost comfortable, good sound if not high end and discreet.

Let us all know about your journey.

Fairly long Journey: Started with a pair of S G Brown diplomats given to me by an uncle, used with my cassette recorder when aged 10 or so. Then moved on to an Eagle closed back pair when I started using the family music centre and my parents didn’t share my love of new wave! The 'phones were like wearing a vice on your head.

Around 1980 a family friend lent me some closed back Sony’s - these were rather better and mainly used with a Beocord 2000 R2R.

Purchase of a Marantz PM310 amplifier led also the purchase of my first pair of open back Sennheisers. Closed back no longer necessary as I was in my room. I upgraded to an Audiolab 8000A and better Sennheisers, although they always sounded a bit sharp. When those died I upgraded to what was their reference model at the time which came in a posh wooden box.

Some time later when they started to play up I borrowed the current magazine Sennheiser favourites for a home trial, but they had a midrange peak I couldn’t live with so instead I bought the parts to fix my references. They are still in use for late night TV watching, however they are open back and my wife doesn’t share my love of new wave etc… Also they’re pretty old tech by now.

I started to investigate modern closed backs and a particular Shure model had good write ups, but when I tried them they weren’t for me. At this point my wife said ‘why don’t you try wireless?’. This was something I hadn’t thought of before so I tried some Sony XM2s & 3s. Either were instantly preferable to the Shures. I preferred the XM2s and they were on offer so I bought them.

By now I had my Naim pre/power setup so there’s no headphone socket anyway. Instead I connected a Bluetooth transmitter to the NAC72 tape out. Over time I started to notice the XM2s had a slight fuzz to their sound signature, once heard hard to unhear.

They have now been replaced by a pair of Beoplay HXs, which were bought as an Xmas present by my wife when on offer. The B&Os also have the advantage that the EQ set in the App is remembered by the phones and still applied to a ‘dumb’ source.

I once started with what was I belief called Koss Porta Pro or something. Incredible value for money as a kid.
I also had for the computer a Senheiser overhead I belief it was a 580 or something like that.
Then I started longer with a Shure In Ear Journey. Started with the SE-415 or 425 whatever the coding was. Then I moved to a Shure SE535…, to end my Shure Journey with the fantastic Shure846 and was quite happy with them for quite a while……until I got onto the Sony Walkman WM1Z…., after a while the Sony IER Z1R came out and I bought them immediately and I am still very happy with them.

At the time of the Shure SE535 I also had the Bose Quiet Comfort Headphones, which I tended to also use as I was flying a lot at that point in time.

I constantly contemplating to also get a headphone based setup in the house to for some music have the option to listen at full volume without upsetting my cat. Was them intended to go for a Headphone Edition and a Focal Stellia or Utopia. However the firmware issues have put this plan on ice, and who knows perhaps forever.

I have been a fairly recent convert for mobile and home listening. See my sytsem details for the current setup. Taken about 5 years.

Three big things to share from my journey through owning about 6 or 7 pairs of decent headphones (various Grados, a Quad and several ZMF) and testing a few more (Audeze, Sennheiser and Focal) three headphone amps (plus an Atom HE) and lots of IEMs (several from Fiio and Grado plus Audiolab, Shure and now JH Audio).

  1. I reckon different brands and models of headphone vary far more then different speakers. Totally different characters and experiences. The ‘best’ aren’t always the most enjoyable either so demo always and don’t assume more money equals a better choice for you.

  2. If it ain’t comfy, it doesn’t matter how good it sounds because you wont use them. Obvious, but often ignored.

  3. I had major issues with IEM comfort and fit. One ear canal seems to be narrow and nothing ever suited until I got a custom mould and a pair of JHAudio made up. What a revelation! If you are having problems it is the way to go. The latest pair I bought is capable of serious quality.

EDITED:So over a period of fifty plus years.

  1. Cheapo, crappy, no name. Took ‘em to uni.
  2. Sennheiser HD420. First real hifi cans. Probably 45 yo but still sounding pretty fair, but not as good as….
  3. Sennheiser HD650. Couple of decades old now, needed a new capsule just before Xmas. Currently in use on the PC for gaming.
  4. B&W P7 (wired/wireless, for mobile use with iPod & A&K junior)
  5. Etymotic Research ER4: I’d forgotten about these. Never really got on with the “right into the ear” fitting, and one broke anyway.
  6. Apple EarPods (ditto for use with iThings)
  7. Sennheiser HD800S. So while buying the bits to fix the 650. (courtesy of Audio Sanctuary/Unilet in New Malden :+1:). I auditioned the 800S…hmmmmmm….resistance was futile  ……and they’re sounding pretty d@mn fine as I type, playing Three Colours Dark on the lounge system - RPi3B+/IQAudio DAC HAT/Moode Audio streamer into NAHA2/NAPSC2.

A brief sojourn rather than a journey I think I bought a pair of Yamaha HP1 in 1980s and still have them. The end.

Currently I use iPod Pros and Etymotic Research ER4SR’s for mobile.

At home, Sennheiser HD 660S2’s. I purchased in 2023 and have used 4 times.

Full size: started iirc with Koss Pro 4AA…then a raft of others (AKG K401 lasted a good while)…Ended up with 2x Audeze, Hifiman Arya Stealth planars and will stay with them.

The rest in between: too many to remember.

Various IEMs, Westone, Triple Fi 10, Senn IE8, Etymotic, some Hifiman or other, Shure etc etc.

And a load of portable headphone amps, players.

Still have some of the IEM’s but don’t use them much.

Have been through various beyerdynamics, AKGs, Audeze, Sennheiser, Grado, and Shure. My current favorites are the Dan Clark Audio (DCA) Aeon 2 open headphone. For mobile I use the Etymotic ER4XR and Apple Airpods.

I should probably sell off the ones I don’t use anymore.

I’m thinking of climbing the ladder of DCA and getting a closed model, but they are not really necessary.
