The classical music thread

Don’t know, I’ve never heard Järvi Jr’s Bruckner from Frankfurt. These new recordings from Switzerland are pretty good, though, even though the Tonhalle doesn’t appear the most opulent of orchestras they do a marvellous job with dynamics and to me Järvi is more interesting than, say, Janowski, Nelsons or Jansons here. Time will tell whether he will enter my shortlist (which includes Giulini, Haitink II, and Chailly, perhaps also Abbado’s last).

The high price for hi-res downloads has been raised previously. It surely costs more to produce and ship a physical CD product, with case/packaging and notes etc. However the price differential I find is usually unjustifiable. For instance the new release of Beethoven Middle Period String Quartets by the Calidore String Quartet on the Signum label - on Presto Classical the CDs are £23.25 (admittedly plus postage), whereas the hi-res downloads are a whopping £41.40. It gets worse: at Qobuz the hi-res download is £45.79.

The recordings would have been made in hi-res at the sessions or concert, so it hasn’t cost the recording company more to produce them.

Any good?

How about Thielemann or Skrawaczewski?

I had to look up Skrawaczewski, but I have the Thielemann cycle and after some early adjustment issues really like him in Bruckner in general but haven’t yet got around to the 9th. Another recent high profile recording is by Manfred Honeck, from Pittsburgh. Didn’t really leave an impression with me but that might have been hype backlash so will give that another chance shortly.

Stan :+1:
I cut my classical teeth with Stan and the Halle throughout the 80’s. He was REALLY old even then it seemed…
Great memories.

I was James Loughran and the Halle in the 1970s. My first concerts as a boy were in the 1971-2 season so just missed Sir John. Again, great memories.

ah… Thielemann’s Bruckner 9 with Vienna Phill was one of the best concert I have attended and it became my reference! I have not heard his latest Sony Bruckner 9 tho. I figured the recording can’t possibly surpass the live experience so I have not bothered getting one.
I am surprised you have not heard Skrawaczewski but he was considered one of the better Bruckner specialist.

His 9th became my imprint during my initial Bruckner exploration stage. Then I understood what this score was about…

Re: Honeck. Oh dear I must say I have been disappointed in anything he does either a recording or actual concert. His style is least of my favourite and I can’t sustain my interest all the way through on anything he does!

btw, Chailly/RCO is going to be playing the Bruckner 9 in February at Concertgebouw. I have not heard any Chailly’s Bruckner so will be interesting.
Are you going to that?

Greatly under rated conductor and yet so humble!

I’ve been looking out for a decent copy of his Brahms 1 on the IMP Classics label for years now. Surprisingly rare, given that it was a budget label recording.

If u mean the CD…

Got it Corry (sorry ). All 4 symphonies in fact. I got mine from an Amazon seller, cheap as chips. I think if u are patient you will grab a copy. If I remember off top of my head, there is more than one issue - with different covers.

If you mean vinyl, it may be as rare as the proverbial hen’s reeth.

Just replaced a copy of his Brahms 1st PC with Barry Douglas (RCA) having given one away - recording by Tony Faulkner gives totally realistic perspective and dynamics - happens to be one of the most communicative 2nd movements I know. DGP

Thanks for the nod, DGP.
Don’t know this Brahms PC1.

Just bought a copy

It’s from very early in Barry Douglas’s career - his more recent recordings of Brahms solo piano show his strengths. I wanted this recording on CD again - hence my buying another copy - having recently rediscovered the physical medium through the purchase of a TEAC VRDS-701 CD player. Be prepared for the massive opening Skrowaczewski drags from the orchestra! Enjoy. DGP

Not even listed on Discogs. Once or twice a year I’ll see one on eBay, but I’ve yet to come across an NM/NM copy, and I’ve been looking for over a decade.

Grieg’s violin sonatas, by Augustin Dumay and Maria Joao Pires. Compared to Hemsing/Trpceski on Bis, these performances are a bit more gentrified, but the depth of tone that both Dumay and Pires achieve is unmatched by their younger peers.

Listened on CD.

Cheers
