No winners, just tell us who you love and what artists you play.
Was just a joke after being overwhelmed at the depth of the thread.
I don’t listen to a great deal of classical to be honest, despite my dad becoming a composer in later life.
I do like Grieg (peer gynt) and Mussorgsky (pictures at an exhibition).
Bought mine as an early Japanese import - guess MQA has some traction in that market still. If yours doesn’t have an MQA logo then I’m sure it’s not MQA! DGP
If you discovered Pictures through ELP, try the Lieutenant Kije Suite by Prokofiev.
Will do, thanks
Donizetti’s Belisario has a decent story, but the music rates among Donizetti’s finest and looks forward to Verdi’s Luisa Miller. One of Opera Rara’s best projects.

Mme Pires poorly at the moment.
Described as a mini stroke. She has withdrawn from imminent concerts.

Sorry to hear that. I bought a “virtual” box set of her solo recordings for DG not that long ago, and it has provided me with much pleasure.
Cooking the Accuphase and giving the Sabrinas a workout with Prokofiev #2 at a healthy volume.

Call it heresy if you will, but over the last month, on evenings when I’m home, I’ve turned on the air conditioner (noisy), muted the TV, tuned into the Yankees or the Mets, and listened to the Festetics play Haydn Quartets on headphones (noise cancelling Bathys or closed back Aeon Flows). Generally two per night. I’m up to Op. 33.
@PW42 this composer might be familiar to you …
Indeed. Although the work was not. I have just listened to it. Very much in the mould of Rhosymedre and quite delightful. Thank you for introducing me to it.
The Richard Hickox performance of Symphony 5 on Chandos, one of the best available IMO, has the orchestral version as one of its fillers. VW in pastoral vein and very enjoyable.

Amati Quartet 2010. I’ve listened to Janáček’s ‘Intimate Letters’ sheltering from the heat this afternoon and for the first time read about the background including his Intimate Letters in English. As many of you will know, he had an 11 year obsession with a woman who was 25 when they met while the composer was 63. There are over 700 letters. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at this dark aspect to the music which is passionate.
Thank you. For some reason, beyond my comprehension, my catalogue of Hickox recordings is rather sparse. I will investigate although the 5th, wonderful as it is, is not one of my favourites (I know, I know. I am a bit of an outlier with that opinion and I should wash my mouth out ).
Thanks I didn’t know that. I’ll search it out. I have taught and seen Translations
