The future of Naim streamers

We stayed with some friends of my wife and we were introduced to their friends because they knew i liked hifi and music. They had a high end system and were very happy with it……noting the placement of this Cello or Bassoon etc. It was very sweet and detailed, but did not engage me……i was after a while more interested in what bird was on the bird feeder. I inevitably got asked my impressions, i tried to get off stage with……not my kind of music. Then my music was put on……Marvin without the soul, the rock but no roll. It was embarrassing………they loved it so much………so much not me. Too many absolutes on this thread…….just buy what u like.

The whole forum really :joy::joy:

Having what you like is great advice.

A system can be better on hifi criterias, like having more details, more open soundstaging, bigger bass….but not engaging emotionally . The DCS Rossini for instance was more spectacular, more dynamic and detailed vs the Nds or Linn Klimax DSM . But the two later engage me more emotionally and connect me more to the music I like.
A SN2/ Cdx2/ XPS 2 / Sonus Faber system speaker better satisfies my ears than a top Soulution, Magico system at 20 times the cost . But I will hardly say that this last system is lesser vs the Naim/ Sonus Faber.

Exactly - different strokes for different folks. As long as you enjoy what you’ve got then who cares what others think. There are no absolutes here.

I’m not sure I understand how this can be done.
Could you elaborate please?

I have mounted the Storage data disk of my Roon ROCK server by SMB in my PC file manager, like this:

Method #2: Importing To Network Folder

in

This folder is watched by ROCK, so any albums you copy in there are automatically recognized by Roon.

On the top level I have folders based on where the files came from:

In each of these folders, I have folders by artist:

And albums within the artist folders:

Of course, you could have all the artist folders at the top level, without the “where from” folders

Hi Jan. Have you subscribed to Roon? Do you pay for it yearly or have you paid the one-off life time membership fee?

Or maybe easier if one owns a Roon Nucleus:

Yes, and if using Roon Server on a PC or Mac, the same is achieved by adding watched folders

Gazza, this resonates with me so much… I too have been introduced, often socially, to high end systems and then whilst the host is expecting me to be impressed, my opinion is sought… and so often it has left me scrabbling away to respond without offending… and some times, although I am not proud I tell a little white lie.

Music replay in domestic environments is such a real compromise then it will be end being ‘tuned’ to what the individual wants rather than typically representing the peak of fidelity.

I can truthfully say in domestic environments there is only one system I have ever heard that bettered mine in terms of what I enjoy… and this setup took over a large semidetached front living room, and had speakers in the near middle of the room, and had consisted of obscure valve amp mono blocks.

Ok, thanks for explaining. In my book, because music replay in Hi-Fi is usually about enjoyment and engagement and ultimately communicating the feel of the mix/master, the better system to me always is the one that achieves that… irrespective of what it is supposed to be.

In music production there are techniques that are in the producer’s / engineer’s arsenal when mixing or even mastering to simulate the sound from so called (some) high end Hi-Fi systems … by (simplistically) emphasising detail and frequency extremes to provide a certain cold or clinical vibe that deliberately is less comfortable… but if everything tends to sound that way… I’d say that is not an optimum system.

Most reviews and audio journalists tend to present Magico and Soulution, or DCS / Boulder or CH Precision as the best systems available. Can’t agree or deny. But it’s not my sound.
When it’s too neutral and clinical, it’s cold for me.
It’s like with cars, even if I have not tried them, you can hardly say that a Lotus is better than a Bugatti Shiron. But some prefer the Lotus without hesitation.

We have an outdoor spa pool (hot tub) at home that we use most days, it’s very nice. I’d quite like a little sauna at home, but my wife isn’t so keen….

I think that’s the best option, no-one will thank you for saying they have an ugly child.

Ah , the WAF factor. It doesn’t apply only to hifi

Well can certainly say the modern dCS kit is not sterile or cold, its very much the complete opposite. Thats why it gets all the great reviews and used in reference systems by many

Let’s see. One light year is about 6 trillion miles - but here we’re speaking about multiple light years, so that’s at least 12 trillion miles.

For the record, I was complaining recently on another forum when a poster said AAC was light years better than MP3. I went on to say, I was sure they felt lossless was light years better than lossy and hi-res was light years better than CD quality. Now we’re getting into a significant difference. :grinning:

Smooth rather than textured, warts and all, is how I see/hear it - then there’s the rhythmic aspect.
