First off:
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Amy MacDonald. This pretty Face
Hissing of Summer Lawns/Harry’s House - Joni Mitchel from the album of the same name.
Oysters, from Unrepentant Geraldines - Tori Amos
Below My Skin from Skyllumina - Ruth Goller. ( for those who love maximum weirdness)
not my days of yore favourites but more recently:
The Smoke Fairies
Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire
Courtney Marie Andrews, Honest Life. I enjoy all her albums, but this one from 2016 might just be the best, both lyrics and voice. Don’t expect anything too upbeat though!
Few album ideas from my collection;
Babes In Toyland - Spanking Machine
The Darts (US) - Boomerang
Julie London - Calandar Girl
Marianne Faithfull - Broken English
Agnes Obel - Citizen of Glass
Savages - Adore Life
Roches- First Album
The Rhythm Sisters - Road to Roundhay Pier
Loads of soul and Motown.
Would never click on a Bill Gates funded rag, but sorry charmed Jack White?
Martin
Anything from Jewel.
With female artists dominating in terms of quality during the 2020s, perhaps we should start another thread: ‘The Men are doing It for themselves.’
Anyway, here’s a current favorite. The band has a great backstory—Mum and Dad formed the band Big Blood at the same time their daughter was born. At 13, the daughter was recruited as a full-time member. The daughter is on lead vocals.
I forgot to mention Cara Dillon. ‘Wanderer’ is my favourite album, but her latest, ‘Coming Home’, is full of beautiful words and music. She’s touring in the U.K. this autumn - highly recommended.
