The Grateful Dead Thread

I’m not familiar with this bootleg release, however, seeing that the same songs are missing I’m guessing they pulled the audio from the official DVD release. I know they played Chuck Berry’s The Promised Land after Bertha, and the encores were with the Neville Brothers sitting in…Iko-Iko, Women are Smarter, and a few other tunes were played prior to Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door…hope that helps…

I can’t find that Grateful Dead album. Any ideas where I might look for it?

It’s the usual fun and fabulous GD show musically, but the SQ from the live recordings are merely acceptable in a fair to middling kind of way.
IMO it’s more of a completist purchase and fine if you don’t pay a lot for it.

Thank you, Debs. I’ll have a think about whether I need another live batch of GD songs.

I think that they cut the ground out from under their own feet with their "Without A Net’ release: great songs and exemplary live recording quality.

Most of the grey area releases like this one are available online as free downloads from archive.org. Personally I find I have more than enough live Grateful Dead material from their official releases, which are generally of the best possible SQ.

Hey Timbo, “Long Strange Trip” is definitely a good Dead documentary. I saw it in the movie theater on one of the “Grateful Dead Night Out at the Movies” that, until the pandemic” they would run every summer around the U.S.

The Grateful Dead organization would pick (usually) a live Dead show show to play for just one night in a bunch of movie theaters across the country. Garcia’s birthday was August 1st so it was usually right around then.

Anyway, when “Long Strange Trip” came out they showed that. I think you were able to order a longer film, with multiple dvds, from the website at one point.

It’s called “The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir.” My brother had recommended it to me and I watched it. I liked it even more than I thought I would.

Hey Nicosrex, I hear you. I think it may have come out as a Record Store Day release some years ago but I can’t remember. I have had it on cd since it came out but some years ago I was thumbing through the stacks in a local, good record store and they had one sealed copy of it in a box set. It’s definitely great to have.

Thanks Debs. I don’t believe I have ever seen that show on cd.

True that Clive. I am continually happy with the amount of releases of past shows from the Dead.

And, by the way… Happy New Year to you all.

Interesting. I love the Europe 72 double disc and especially Morning Dew which was featured in the documentary. There seem to be a lot of Grateful Dead live albums for sale on various online sites here in England. I’m tempted to buy something on vinyl and have shortlisted the Harding Hall concert, but I’m open to guidance.

Tim

I don’t know anything about the Harding Hall recording which seems to be a bootleg. Do you have Skull & Roses (Skull F…) which was reissued last year on vinyl (official release) - that’s from 1971 and is a classic live double album (£27 on Amazon).

HMV also still has copies of the Shrine 1967 issue (I think it was an RSD release) - 3 LPs of fantastic early psychedelic Dead.

And on 28 January they are releasing another vinyl box set from the 1969 Fillmore West recordings. I have preordered from Juno.

Got the Skull and Roses on CD. I’ll have a look on Amazon, however the Shrine one you mention sounds quite intriguing and will also look at Juno for the Fillmore West recording.

Thanks
Tim

Thank you for the recommendation, Debs,I’ve bought a copy. (As was entirely predictable.)

With so many band sanctioned painstakingly selected and exceptionally mastered official releases, I’d steer clear of bootlegs. Is there a specific era that you prefer? Happy to make some suggestions.

I’m not sure that you meant to reply to me. My message was trying to suggest some official vinyl releases for Timbo. I don’t buy the bootlegs for the very reason that I have a massive collection of official releases on vinyl and CD - much to the amusement of my family.

Clive… my response was also intended for Timbo :slightly_smiling_face:
