It’s not my thread, but I certainly hope not. I love Dead and Co… am at the moment figuring out my Summer tour plans as pre-sale starts tomorrow.
Our plans look something like this…
Folsom Field - Boulder CO June 17, 18
Deer Creek - Noblesville IN, June 28
Pine Knob - Clarkson MI, June 29
Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center, Saratoga NY… July something lol
It was 50 years ago today, 8th April 1972… I saw my first Grateful Dead show at the Empire Pool Wembley. It was truly awesome and I was so lucky to catch them on such a special night! There is a Deadcast which covers the first Europe 72 shows in great detail with a lot of input from those who were there:
The Lyceum box is covered by David Lemieux here:
I only went to the show on Wednesday May 24th in that Lyceum run but it was nice to hear David picking it as one of the best of the whole tour!
The Wembley show is being released as a limited 5 LP set for record store day. I would love to buy it but a friend who is more into vinyl says that RSD is a complete zoo with long queues and no way to ensure you get what you are after! Why are vinyl fans such masochists? I will see if it is still available after the madness subsides - I still have my vinyl but rarely play it as streaming is so much better as an experience so it would be more of a souvenir as I have it at least 3 times on other formats.
Hey pev… have to say April 8 1972… pretty awesome first show experience. I actually re-listened to the 2nd set yesterday after catching the GD podcast and that Dark Star… wow. That sent me down the rabbit hole and then I revisited a few 1972 Dark Stars… then the rabbit hole expanded and I got sucked into listening to some later era GD until about 11 pm… then switched gears to Dead and Co. Funny how that can happen
Being a relative whippersnapper, my first show was 1987-06-30.
I definitely want to pick up the RSD vinyl release… pondering the Lyceum vinyl box, but man… it’s so unneccesary. I already have the whole tour on CD. We shall see. Very very tempting.
Pev… if you want to relive your first show… DSO re-created it last night at the Skull and Roses in Ventura CA… 50 years from the day… free stream is available on YouTube… just search Skull and Roses April 8 2022 and scrub the final 3ish hours of the stream.
Pev999, how cool that the Wembly show was your first show! That was still some 5.5 years before I saw my first show… and, of course, I was in the U.S. and not the U.K.
I am psyched to see the Dead releasing such a big vinyl box but I am going to pass on it (most likely…) due to cost.
And, my oh my, how I love each season of the “Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast.” They do a spectacular job with that podcast.
Agree re the Deadcast. It’s a treasure trove of information… and very entertaining. I particularly enjoy any segment with Sam Cutler. I could listen to him tell stories forever.
Not sure if anyone here besides me subscribes to Nugs.net… great service for streaming live music… tons on bands on there. They just uploaded 5 soundboards from the Wolf Bros Spring tour… worth checking out if you love the Dead. Bobby’s done an amazing job building that band… they make a big joyful noise. The recordings are fantastic, and Bobby is in great voice on the show’s I’ve sampled. Check it out if so inclined
I have been agonising over the Record Store Day Wembley release ever since it was announced.
I wanted it so badly that I could taste it since that was the first of only 2 times that I saw them, the last time that my father and I went out together (he died in the November of that year but had concealed the fact that he was terminally inn from me), and I have a vivid memory of being completely blown away by the performance, particularly Dark Star followed by Sugar Magnolia.
On the other hand I was terrified that my recollection was tinted with the rosey glow of retrospect and would not be matched by hearing it again, and struggled to justify the cost.
I had mentioned all this in passing in a conversation with some friends a few weeks ago, and was completely overwhelmed when one of them bought it for me.
Suffice to say, my memory of that night, if anything, did not do justice to the performance.
I’m still hoping to get hold of the Empire Pool RSD set but I haven’t seen it yet and opportunities have been limited. My local store reckon they can order it in tomorrow, so I’m keeping fingers crossed. Otherwise I’ll have to chance my luck that there are still some copies when RSD goes online on Friday. I was there the previous night as far as I can remember - the first night of the tour, then again at one of the Lyceum nights.
Not a single one in the UK unfortunately, and buying from European countries is no longer practical as there are import duties. In fact I find it shocking how many are up there already with some flippers trying to double the price. That’s why I think the whole RSD deal has soured. I saw that last year the Hoffman Forum marketplace had banned RSD sales for a period (six months, a year?) and thought that was a good response.
Thanks to a heads up from CliveB we’ve both got the Wembley set from Banquet records in Kingston, England. They still have a few left it seems and are selling on line
Heads up for Sky Arts Channel in the UK tonight - a 150 minute film of a 1974 Winterland show at 9.00 followed at 11.30 by Classic Albums covering Anthem and American Beauty.
