As part of the Artworks documentaries, R4 has just started The Guitar Story over 4 parts, this week it started with the first episode, focusing on Flameco to the Blues. I expect the series will be available as a podcast on Sounds or other places.
So far, it seems pretty good, well for someone like me who knows next to nothing about the history of the guitar.
Yes, Artworks The Guitar Story is now on BBC Sounds. (UK only though France may carry this?) First episode released today others will follow.
Showing and playing for me in France:
As far as I can tell, everything on Sounds is available for listening overseas, it’s just that you can’t download anything outside the UK.
@Ebor That’s good for you Ebor. Are you streaming this from your Naim Radio or your phone? I’m in the UK, so it doesn’t affect me, but I understood that streams outside the UK on Sounds are blocked since last year. There are exceptions for holidaymakers and some commercial services.
@bhoyo who would like to stream, but currently can’t.
On my iPhone. Same in Germany and Belgium a week or so ago, and in the US and Canada last year. No idea if the system somehow knows I’m not a native and therefore lets me do it, or not.
Ah, that explains it, you are signed in with BBC Sounds as UK resident and so you can travel abroad and listen. People who live abroad can’t do this.

We’re the poor, put-upon Americans!
@bhoyo We used to think that ‘soft power’ was important, but perhaps the BBC or its commercial arm might sell you streaming in the future. ![]()
I’ve been happily and gratefully paying my TV licence for decades…
[yes, I know that the licence fee and BBC Sounds are not especially connected, except in my mind]
