It’s difficult for me to understand. I should first learn what hz, dB, Sabine…etc means. These are not my studies.
I know that problem.
I’m planning to build my own bass traps with a primary absorption band from about 35Hz to about 250Hz-300Hz (aka most of the bass region, and including the main resonance modes of my listening room).
Membrane tech. ?
Not the classic resonant MLV membrane; instead a damped but fairly lightweight and softly suspended membrane with a HF reflective surface.
Yes bass seems difficult to tame. I have a problem at around 40hz and would need tuned traps since I haven’t really found basstraps with porous material that can handle the deepest bass.
This is my corner bass trap.
I have aproximately 2,8 sqm in the corners behind the speaker.I think the top measurments are 3,6 sqm
The 4 GIK Acoustic Monster Bass Traps with Range Limiter arrived.
The glossy white frame, that will match the Vicoustic diffusers, should be installed during the weekend.
The Monsters are 6 inch thick and I’ll leave 1 inch air gap (resulting in better low end absorption)
The Vicoustic foam panels will favorably be replaced, resulting in a more even decay time across the frequency spectrum.
It’ll be interesting to hear about the results. The basstraps SOFSCI sells are only for corner mounting. They call their superchunk bass traps but they absord nothing below 125hz. That is not what I call a bass trap. The only ones I have found that seems to be good enough are the ones from GIK. The superchunk is only 65 mm thick.
Just ordered 2 GIK trip traps. Thanks Thomas, IB, Xanthe, for having help me to decide myself.
Will of course give here my impressions on how it works in my room and system.
I choose the stone color.
Nice, i have some GIK acoustiks stuff here, and this is really providing a big improvment while listening.
I’ve just got the first part of the materials to make my V2 bass traps. Due to other time pressures (and probably exacerbated by the effects of ADHD), build is not going to go quickly.
I changed my mind because the measurements were not very good. Some commented them not favorably. ( Thomas, IB and Xanthe).
But i would prefer to buy them for its friendly price. And they looked nice too.
If cheap enough you could always buy them anyway, for their looks… (or cat scratch post!)
I already test it (not measured). I placed 2 free standing GIK Monster Bass traps. My wife was the beta tester.
As said previously, placing the traps behind speakers improved significantly the overall music perception. No surprise really (for me). But, for my wife, it was really something of a surprise!
She even described the improvements quite accurately “higher notes are crystal clear now and easier to follow; the lower notes are lighter which allows me follow the rest”.
Usually she doesn’t pay attention to my experiments, unless they produce something she enjoys.
We (she) concluded that we should replace those nice little foam absorbers she enjoys so much because they are sooo nice
Calling “Bass Traps” a 65mm panel is nearly a lie. At least in our universe with our laws of physics
Damping below ~50 Hz using porous material implies using a huge amount of that material.
A 65 mm thick panel will take care of some mids and highs only.
I didn’t get the type of traping you’re planning to build. Will they be sandwiched membranes hanging freely against a wall? I saw some pictures of such solutions. Interesting!
I should post the Bluetones on systems pics and pets
My speakers position are optimal. I made a lot of different set up and it took a lot of time.
My listening position can’t change.
As I posted above, I am globally very satisfied with the sound. Just some stationary bass or something like that, “ traînage du grave” , for some tracks, very very few.
So my goal is just to optimize the system.
As for building my own bass traps, I have no tools, no skills, and no desire to do that.
I ordered two bass traps. So you are right, I will try in the 2 different corners behind the speakers and also the two corners behind my head. It will be a busy afternoon!
