The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

I have ordered a 250-03 for my study system to replace the 300 that I hadn’t quite got round to servicing so still in the boxes!

Going to try a 222 with it for a while and then compare with the 282/hc/ndx (or more precisely sort of imagine how it might compare with ndx2 which would be the next step)

Anyone using new gear with nSats? Mine are on wall brackets

As this is the study system there is no interest from me in anything higher up the range. If I get the 222 I might add the power supply in a year or so

Also going to have a listen to an active 3x250 system (Ross’s at Acoustica - he has S1 and 808s like me) when I get chance and will consider swapping out the 500 for 3x250-03 then.

We are looking forward to cheaper boomerangs and of course the wine……
to dull the pain when they unexpectedly return and hit us on the head.

Which active crossover is he using? Now that Naim have discontinued the Snaxo there wouldn’t be much point in hearing a Snaxo based based system. Unless of course you could find one second hand. Maybe a DBL/Brik Snaxo could be converted to 808 ? Good luck anyway.

He’s using a snaxo - but in recent instals they have used an exposure crossover (I think it’s exposure), so that’s what they recommend at the moment

Will be interested to hear how that goes. A lot of love building for the 250.3.

As an initial comment. Well done Naim with the new series. Sorry everyone but you really need to upgrade with an NPX300

Looking forward to the next steps with the 300 new series

I noticed that the speaker connection for one speakers is almost in the centre of the unit. Does the centre leg get in the way on fraim? As looking at it, it looks certainly like you will have to bend it out the wsy to miss, or it will foul or touch the rear leg.
Small or nice bendy speaker cable probably needed, or does it miss ok, and hang freely, as i guess naim wouldn’t make this mistake and it fouls it.
But someone must have one on fraim

Acoustica has a write-up of the new 250’s active on their website. Read at your own risk

I can guess how it goes, especially as the difference between the 500dr and the 250.2 was very close, with no real winner.
The 250.3 is better, but running 3 active is going to cost

Ha ha. Yes, sadly I’ve read that already. Happily I have kids starting Uni so funds have been reallocated so I don’t need to worry about it.

That’s incorrect. If your kids want a future too, they should happily get a loan for it

222/300/250 just taken another leap forward in performance after four months…. Definitely not “bright”

Bright is definitely not a word I would use. My limited 2 hour demo (1 hour with NPX300 added), I would say definitely different to the “old” classics with a cleaner more focussed sound which seems to remove that edge that some perceive. That Naim character still remains however which is of course good. Overall early days but I did find the new series quite ok. Of course when I got home, I am not at all disappointed with what I have there

It has occurred to me that, with the 250 replaced already, and the 300 about to be replaced - presumably the 500 will follow, though perhaps not very soon. The real long term question is will the new 500 beat 3x250. I don’t have space for 3x300 (and that would be pricey) so maybe I should wait until the new 500 comes? Not in any kind of hurry anyway…

Wait and see is probably the best thing to do ? I certainly wouldn’t want to go back to active these days unless the correct amps are built into the speakers. As all the extra cables, boxes etc, are just a nightmare really.
But as i now have a lovely big powerful class A amplifier, i don’t even think about it.

I am quite liking having reduced the number of boxes with the S1 and passive 500dr…

I look forward to simplifying my system to such a minimalist set.
