The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

The NAP250 was introduced in 1975 - replacing the original NAP200, of 1973.

So that means its had about 50 years of evolution… so far… :open_mouth: :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes of course, i was meaning from it’s ‘classic’ guise. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes I’m with you on this one Yeti

In one system ( in another location 100kms away from Sydney) I have the 252/SCDR/250DR

My place in Sydney I have the SN3/HICAPDR

There is something very pleasing about the latter I must say, so I’m looking forward to see where the new Naits land

I think @NoNaim is referring to the Six Million Dollar Man (a TV programme from the 70s).
He was injured but was re-built better, stronger & faster than he was previously – classic TV!

Wouldn’t it have to be five to five?

First ever series “ before my time 5.15.” :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

In danger of repeating my self to mouch here, i just wanted to say that my nsc 222 still, is improving, now after 3 months🙈 Feel that the bass has more power and the top end is more open and at the same time more pleasing to the ears. Naims engineers have done a terrific job with combining a large scale majestic sound and at the same time preserve cohorence and ‘’prat’’. It is really good this pre amp.

I will be halfway there this week and it is already sounding better, looking forward to 3 months and beyond.

Since TV went to colour, it’s never been any good.

Good to hear :+1:

Btw, wait until you bring in a NPX 300 into play. Not only will the NPX 300 turbo charge the NSC 222

but the NPX 300 will also snap the NSC 222 and the New Classic NAP 250 into sharp focus just nicely :slightly_smiling_face:

For me in my setup, the 250.3 beats the 300DR in terms of speed, timing, tonality and lower noise floor.

The 300DR has a bit more grunt and meat, bit bigger soundstage and is better at lower volumes.

My Spendors are very easy to drive and and can be ruthlessly revealing so the sweeter tonality of the 250.3 works better for me. For other systems the 300DR may work better.

The great news is the 250.3 is vastly better than the 250 DR so it means even better amps in the future.

Not much of any of it is any good.
I’m hard wired to Talking Pictures TV. :+1:t2:

In what way is the new classic 250 ‘vastly better’ than the 250DR? I find my 250DR fast, punchy, meaty, good at low volumes, and just very very pleasing. Personally, not fussed about soundstaging or ultimate detail.

Yes agree Django84

I also would like to know. Comparisons are being made to the current 300 but really no detail about how it improves over the 250DR

First of all this is not a knock on the 250 DR it is still a great amp.

It has a much lower noise floor. I am hearing information on records that was hidden and I never heard before with the 250DR. But t’s not hyper detailed. Everything is presented as a whole and not pulled apart like most highly detailed audio.

It has more depth and space but again it’s not forced or pulled apart. It just makes a better musical experience

It is much quicker at starting and stopping notes. It just grabs onto the rhythm and pulls you into the performance. This allows it to show off the decay, over tones and harmonics without missing the beat. The PRAT is up there with the best.

The musical landscape is much bigger. My Spendors sound like a bigger speaker. It also has much more weight and slam. The bass is much more defined as well. What sounded like one note bass on some records on the 250 now blossoms and you can hear the subtleties and it’s actually more than one bass playing the same note.

You can also crank it up more without the sound changing and being forced. The tonality and textures are sweeter and more refined. You can really hear it on orchestra pieces.

I got it on a whim. I was not in the market and had just moved into a new house. It was such a big difference I thought I may have had the 250DR out of phase but I didn’t.

To me it was more like a Preamp or Source upgrade. It and the Klimax Radikal for my LP12 are the two biggest upgrades I have experienced so far

Thanks nicnaim

I have the Linn LP12 Klimax 40th with the 252/SCDR/250DR

I’ll be waiting for all the naim replacements until I jump into the melting pot

Isn’t that already the Atom (for Nait) and Nova (Supernait)? - seems the logical step replacement for the integrated amps are the fully integrated versions already available.

Maybe a merging between the Uniti and Nait lines…

Sounds like my reaction to 300DR compared to the 250DR.

The real meat and potatoes (for me) will be the NC replacement for the 300DR…but above my ability to pay for it I’m guessing.
