The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

Year of the first home products produced by Naim. NAP 200 was launched as the first product.

It does make me wonder what future product this relates to?

I bought my first Naim, the 272 in 2017…
Never late

I know why. On 18 May 1973, Dawn’s epic Tie a Yellow Ribbon was no. 1. It was displaced the following day by Wizzard’s See My Baby Jive. Perfect Naim dem material.

And me… I was born in ‘73

…in may '73 I was in my 22th month of a 48 month enlistment in the Marine Corps and 19 years old. Back then it was a Pioneer Receiver with Garrard Turntable, TEAC Reel to Reel and JBL 88 speakers. Naim to not enter the picture until May, 2017.

That was pretty tasty then for a 19 year old, back then.

The Pioneer Receiver with Garrard Turntable and JBL 88 speakers were bought from a Mail Order company in California that provided credit to young serviceman. I bought the TEAC Reel to Reel from another Marine who bought it oversees in a military PX store. You might say it was a real bargain at the time from another Marine who was about to ship out again and needed to unload some gear.

Young, dumb and happy young man who has been fortunate and now a senior citizen who is a bit smarter and still working on being happy!

So the npx 300 will have use beyond the 200 series products? Clue is in the range number I guess.

If you look at Naim’s website, you will see which other products will be part of the 300 series.

Manual, section 4.1

The NPX 300 is a new design of power supply, able to be connected to any 200 Series or 300 Series Naim Audio source product.

So it was never a secret

I would have been 6 and a half :grinning: in May 73. My grandma & grandad bought an HMV Interceptor Stereogram around that time and still had it working in the late 90s.

Only 2 more sleeps to go kids and this thread will light grandpa’s pipe after a few drinks.

Is it safe to Google what that means!?

I guess so.

If we could harness the energy level created on this thread and plug into the national grid this could potentially solve the energy crisis.

I’m absolutely fascinated by what’s to come with the new 300 series.

Having read this entire thread over the last few months, my take on the New Classic 200 series is that it’s at worst close to the Old Classic NDX2/252/300 and at best a notable improvement. Albeit with a different sound signature i.e. cleaner, brighter, which may or may not be a good thing dependant on personal viewpoint.

If the same follows with the 300 then will the 500 series be rendered all but obsolete in the Naim offering by default? Assuming the new 332 pre comes in at around £12k then it will still be around half the price of a 552. That doesn’t bode well for the ND555/552/500 if the 300 series gets the same reception as the 200’s…

That said, I’m sure my 500’s will still sound marvellous regardless. I’ll just have to stop reading this thread

Edit: of course the 332 will need a PS taking it up to c. £18k. All guesswork of course!

I believe it will cost about half as much as the ND555, so £8,700? To be on the safe side, add an extra 1K.

Here we go again

Oops I meant to type 332 (new pre) not 333. Corrected now.
