The Naim New Classic range - Part 1

The NSC 222 is extremely good and with the NPX 300 much better still. Now we have these new products we can set about comparing properly to the original Classic Series here at Cymbiosis. Let’s just say that the demo I had in Salisbury was excellent and I was very impressed :sunglasses:

It does say “designed and made in the uk” on the back

Bravo to Naim for adding balanced XLR’s. This was a major blocking point when I was considering replacing my power amps with a 250.

I see Cyrus have also launched a Classic range!

Well, Naim don’t do their own surface mount work (outsourced to specialists) and they don’t forge their own aluminium etc… but otherwise they do build their kit - select, test, solder, through hole, wire, assemble, test etc.

Sounds like a terrible job but I guess someone has to do it

Now I doubt seriously. Upgrade from my 250 dr to the new 250 or from Nds to Nd555?
Same amount of money, if Nd555 head unit is bought second hand.
Time will say.

Given the hefty mentions of 0.5W standby, I’d imagine the new classic box works ‘correctly’ with new classic source equipment. Thinking out loud if probably has soft start/wake from standby when connected to the source device. Maybe even synchronisation of the logo brightness over the burnet. In legacy mode I imagine there’s a difference in operation (it likely just stays on all the time or kills the device it’s connected to).

From the spec sheet

Analogue
1 x XLR pair (Stereo XLR balanced impedance 7Vrms max)
1 x RCA pair (Stereo RCA 7Vrms max)

So vinyl is analogue all the way to the power amp?

Can i add a 250 to an Atom HE? Could look nice together

All outputs are ‘balanced impedance’ and all inputs are ‘balanced’. A white paper will be released soon. Gives the same external noise rejection, retains the sonic character of single ended and the same signal level with RCA and XLR (no 6dB jump). Uses industry standard XLR to XLR cables. Can be used with single ended systems with appropriate interconnects too (e.g. RCA to XLR or visa versa).

Finally! And looks great. Well done to Naim and hope it sounds even better than it looks.

Although I am sorted at this stage and had to do it in a different way, it’s good to see Naim has caught up, and a phono, nice one. … and with trickled down technology from my Atom HE! :)))

If I was starting from scratch I would buy the new 222-250 blind today but with the Atom HE + SN3 & SCDR (and working very well with my speakers and room) I feel I am already there or thereabouts. So although not a trigger for me, who knows, may be with the next updates. Look forward to first impressions from auditioning. Who will be the first to post on System Pics?

Incidentally it all looks really good, looking forward to a listen.

Well I really like this new design very much, green or not. IMHO a worthy successor to classic “Classic” and looking very modern and great with Unitis. Well done!

Now waiting for the new 500 series so that I can help a forum member get rid of their ND555 and NAC552

Correct, phono input to speaker is all pure analogue

With the “Balanced XLR” outputs, I’m thinking NSC222 coupled to ATC SCM40A’s.
So much so that I am actively trying to set that demo up ASAP.
That would have the added benefit of not needing to procure a separate Streamer (ND5 XS 2)
This is really exciting. Better than Christmas.
The “Down Under” contingent are missing all the FUN!

From my short piece of internet research (and reading the new classic product pages), I might suggest there aren’t any UK based marketing staff apart from the Naim records label manager left.

Great combo, yes, fully compatible

Most important of all; what’s the nomenclature for the New Classic 250 to differentiate from 250DR? NC250? 250DR2??

The current Classic series is also labeled with “DESIGNED AND MADE IN ENGLAND”…
