Glad to see your initial impressions are very positive!
Btw, love your Avid Ingenium TT!
Funny coincidence⦠the last few weeks Iāve been thinking: "how would a good TT sound through my Nait 50 ?, and the Avid Ingenium crossed my mindā¦
If Iām wise I probably stick to digital only (only have about 25 LPās left), but sometimes⦠the itch is coming back. (one of the most musically involving systems Iāve had in the last 35 years was a Thorens TD165/SME2009 into a Nait-2.
Hi Alco, thanks. Yeah, I was in a similar position to yourself. Had sold all my vinyl as quickly and cheaply as possible at the start of the CD revolution and only had a select handful of LPās left. Kept reading about how good Avid turntables were and on a crazy whim just went out and got one. Then spent the next year or so trawling as many thrift stores as I could find to rebuild a collection. No regrets. Had the Ingenium about 3 years now. One of the first tracks I listened to on the Nait was Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. It gave me goosebumps. Then listened to the same track on lossless streaming via my phone and decent Samsung buds using Samsungs proprietary codec. It sounded good but there was no emotion coming through. It was like I was listening to a completely different track.
I might nudge you to try a move from the Thorens. Iāve owned several different Thorens turntable theTD125 with the SME 3009 improved for a number of years until recently.
A month ago I purchased a open box Technics SL1300G for just under Ā£2k all I can say just swapping carts over from one arm to the other is what a revelation itās been the sonic jump in performance in comparison is significant, soundstage, dynamics, resolution revealing of those little nuances and a level of decay to notes that just seems to linger on and on.
It was a spur of the moment purchase on my part as getting older and a loss of dexterity changing a cart on the fixed headshell same was becoming a bit problematic and frustrating. I was looking at just replacing the tonearm when I spotted the deal on the technics and decided to go for it.
Fwiw the inbuilt phono on N50 worked well on the TD125 the difference between it and my fettled all tube phono into the was small but on the SL1300G the differences of the tube phono into the N59 are significantly more noticeable in favor of the stand alone tube phono (circa £900) particularly the lingering decay of notes.
The old Thorens I had on loan from a friend, for only a week or 2, long ago.
Nowadays Iād prefer a non sub-chassis TT, like a Rega or the Avid Ingenium.
Iāve heard several AVID TTās in the past (they were the mainly used turntable brand of the Naim dealer, where I got my first ever Naim amp, a CB Nait 2)
Hi @Saddleburner
I donāt know those speakers but I was doubtful as to whether the NN50 could drive my PMC 25.23iās. On paper no, but the reality is the NN50 drives my PMCās better than my Supernait 3.
So providing your room isnāt too big, I agree with @Andreas.ca - if at all possible, give the NN50 a try and see how it manages your MA Golds 100s. Good luck - I hope they are a good match.
My Dave has had to go for a service so Iāve moved the Nait 50 back upstairs into the bedroom and have it hooked up to a 15 year old Marantz NA7004 network player for the time being leaving the source to the main rig as my TT and Oppo 205 for streaming and cd paired with my 300B amp downstairs.
Of course the Marantz is outclassed by the Dave in all aspects but saying that the old Marantz still makes for a really enjoyable listen. Iāve been listening to some albums by Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave the last few days and the distinctive gravitas and tonality of their vocals on the Marantz N50 combo has surprised.
Also a new recent band discovery to me is the Thievery Corporation not had a chance listened to them with the Dave in the main system but again the N50 strengths I feel play well with this genre of music.
Thanks both. Tempted to give them a try as the bigger 100ās have had good reviews and I like the look of them. Iāll be around 3-4 metres away from them so will see.
Interesting, after several months of listening to my Nait 50 Iāve found myself listening less and less, and realised the highly detailed top end was making me feel fatigued.. I wouldnāt call it shrill, but tiring.
As I use AudirvÄna I was able to tweak the sound slightly by using the in built digital processor to drop the 8Khz and over frequencies by about 3db. I think itās better now, so will give that a go for a bit.
I wonder if my Vertere speaker cables are a bit too much for the N50. I may try some NACA5, but if the EQ works, I may just leave it at thatā¦.
Its developed a intermittent repeating stutter in the form of a static click every 20 or so seconds on the the RCA outputs the XLR output is not affected. Only problem since 2019 Itās being done under warranty.
@Blackbird I swapped cables. No difference, but I think itās the two big glass panels behind the sofa. Flat is rented as I would not have put them up. Have taken one down and its a bit betterā¦..
I had a slight static sound from my TT this morning. Regular click then crackle that I only noticed with new headphones. This disappeared when I unplugged my DAC from the stream din input. I assumed that the inputs would be isolated and not affect each other but doesnāt appear to be the case..on another note my Naim interconnect RCA plug came apart when unplugging the DAC. Very small bit of solder holding the wire in place with no cable grip so be careful people!
Sorry if it has been answered elsewhere but what is the situation with the UK warranty?
There are currently several secondhand Nait 50s on eBay for less than Ā£1K or thereabouts. Is the original 2 year warranty transferable to a new owner up to the point the amplifier is two years old? Also, is there any real way of knowing when an amplifier hits its 2nd birthday? I know there are production serial numbers (which donāt seem that up-to-date on Naimās website nowadays) but the warranty goes from the date of first sale, not the date of production - a bit like a carās warranty runs from date of first registration, not the date it was built. Assuming that Naim built the 1973 Nait 50s in 2023/24, even ābrand newā ones are going to be hitting at least one year old from date of production.
Finally, in the UK, assuming the first owner bothered filling in the extended warranty card, the warranty then lasts 5 years. How much of this is transferable? I assume the balance of the initial 2 years but what about the final 3?
