The new NAIT 50 Limited Edition

I have auto standby turned off per general consensus it sounds better that way, although I’ve never experimented. I’ve never left it fully on outside of when listening. I do clearly hear an improvement with warmup over 20 to 30 mins.

Leave it on for about a week,I think you will hear a
an uplift.

May I ask what people that own a Nait 50 find when they turn up the volume on the phono input with the turntable not switched on or disconnected. What is the noise level of the phono stage at perhaps 2 meters from the speakers when at 10, 11 and 12? From where on can you hear it, no music playing?

I appreciate this is rather unscientific and subjective. We all have speakers of different sensitivity for a start. Still … in my case, I can hear hiss from around 09.30 on the dial quietly at 2.5 meters and easily from 10.30 onwards. Speakers are 90/91 db/W 1m.

I am currently trying to eliminate another issue and posted a separate thread which resulted in helpful replies but thought I’d ask this here. Thank you.

@Winniethefoo
Just now I checked mine with the P3esr (83db/1w/1m) connected to the N50 and, at 2.5 meters listening distance, hiss starts to become faintly audible approx. at 10:30.

Edit: That is with no turntable connected at the phono input of the N50.

The same here. Don’t use a TT. Zero hiss on stream even at 100%

Mine is more of a hum, which I’m sure is a recent thing :face_without_mouth:

My NN50 is powering some Neat Iota’s as a desk setup with the speakers just beyond arms length and the only device connected is my RME DAC to Stream input.

I can hear noise (more white-noise than hiss) it at 09:30, quite audible at 10 and at 12 o’clock, it’s like sitting about 50m away from a waterfall ….

I don’t use a TT and so have rca RA Shorties installed in both my Nait2 and Nait 50. Very effective from what I remember (away from home so cannot remind myself but I would have sent them back if they were no good). I also have the 5 pin DIN Shorties installed on the other unused inputs so they just do something or I’m losing the plot!

Sounds like that’s pretty normal. Large gain on the phono stage and a sensitive amp. Do you notice it when playing music or between tracks? If not I wouldn’t worry about it

me too! the phono input hummed with nothing connected to it and these silenced it.

Thank you to everyone. Seems like my phono stage noise floor is about average.

Thanks for the query @winniethefoo. Thought I’d check the wiring to see if I could improve things so I removed the ground wire from my turntable to the amp and it has lowered the noise level no end! Didn’t sound bad before but sounds much cleaner now

Hi guys, has anybody with non Naim source/DAC experienced any humming/buzz noises with the N50? Recently I have been trying a different DAC, until now with my nDAC I had 0 hum, regardless of the volume level, but with another dac, a R2R ladder DAC in particular, there is a hum when I turn the volume beyond 12 oclock, with no music on it is pretty audible. Previsously, many year ago when I had an SN2, James_N suggested the following grounding DIY method, which seemed to cure the problem. My question is, can similar connection be applied with the N50? If yes, to which DIN socket?

It should be connected already so I don’t see how it would help connecting them. At least on Nait 50.

assume the R2R dac is unearthed? if so try earthing that to the N50 ground maybe

Yep, tried that as well, I have an LPS even attached to it, a good one, makes no difference. I am maybe inclined to believe that there is probably an issue with the device, so just wanted to try every possible scenario before making any final conclusion and packing it for return to dealer.

Hey Realdpg, I’ve got two Denafrips Enyo 15th Dac’s into N50’s, zero hum at 12 oclock on the dial and input selected. Hope that helps.

Cables are Chord Clearway X RCA to Din cables in both instances.

No hum at all with my Naim NDX2 connected to my Nait50… with or without ground set chassis or float.

No hum whatsoever with my non Naim sources as well. Including the Chord DAVE DAC.

Hi Simon. I’m fascinated by your decison to move to the Nait50 and LS3/5a’s. I believe you mentioned that you previously had a 552 etc. What speakers were you using with that? My fascination is two fold really. Firstly what seems, on the face of it, to be a massive downgrade and secondly the choice of LS3/5a’s. The LS3/5a’s because they always struck me as embracing completely different sonic objectives to what Naim is all about. I’ve heard LS3/5a’s on several occasions, though not with Naim amplification and whilst I can appreciate their well-known virtues to my ears they sucked all the life and dynamics out of the music. Clearly not your experience at all. I find this very interesting. What made you go to the '‘BBC sound’ specifically as opposed to something more overtly dynamic and fast? Hope you don’t mind me asking.
