I have a Cyma watch from the 30s.
A bike from 1894.
Hobart A200 from 1981.
Berkel 834 from 1988.
Yes, missing a counter weight. The Pendulum connection is a bit off.
Original ropes were replaced by chains many years ago.
It use to run when we use to visit my Great Aunt. One bed cottage, outside toilet, no running hotwater, open fire in the kitchen, electric fire in the Lounge, baby Belling oven.
Hardy woman lived to 99, youngest of 8 daughters, younger brother (my Grandfather) lived to 89
So a 30 hour clock then. The chains are longer lasting and don’t generate dust that ends up in the movement so that is good.
I believe the chain would have to be split (temporarily) to allow a new counterweight to be fitted. They are usually made of lead so it could have just worn through.
Yes, I believe so, with quarter hour chimes.
The weight had a hook on it - would need to look again at the chains.
Even though I got the weight with the clock, and it was in the hall arean of an apartment, I didn’t try and run it.`
Then when I moved to a house, it was in the attic/loft for 5 years. Then in a storage unit for another 5.
It was back out in entrance halls of 2 apartments from 2015 to 2019, and then to earlier this year - they were in converted mansion house, formerly used as a convent. So it fitted in perfectly, probably from the same time.
Current apartment is too new, penthouse with lots of floor to ceiling windows - so it is tucked away in a ‘boot’ room by the door.
I think the weight was lost in the loft/attic of the house, where I placed it safely next to a joist and then forgot to take it, when I moved.
That’s the main weight, the counter-weight is smaller. Like this on mine. Yes the rope is getting a bit frayed and needs a trim ![]()
If there are no winding holes on the dial it’s definitely a 30 hour clock.
My functioning French Brass Ormolu clock, which still works and keeps good time.
Eight day winder, a reproduction piece from about 1865 (so not actually from the true Ormolu period)
More importantly Bacchus is there to remind when it’s time to open a bottle of red.
I think we ought to look at what the definition of machine or appliance means?
Some have taken this as any old stuff that lives in my house rather than what I think the OP was intending ?
I have a similar counter weight looped into one of the chains. Then there is a pulley on the other with a hook for the main weight, which is missing.
That does sound like a 30 hour then so the weight you mentioned should be fine.
I keep telling mine I need to trade her in for a new one!![]()
Hotpoint tumble dryer - 35 plus years. Repaired many times.
Psion 5mx - estimate 25 plus years. Repaired once by me; before that, who knows? I buy them whenever I can.
Both still in daily use.
If we’re talking hi-fi then my oldest must be a pair of B&W DM1 I bought slightly second hand from a shop in Plymouth in 1971. Still in almost daily use in the study system.
How I wish I still had all the valve amplifiers I also had at the time.
I’m afraid that when I say so, she’ll slowly looks at me from the top of my bald head to my old socks and the other way round and say ‘yea right.
The clue is the writing under “Hotpoint” ![]()
Here is the grinder mentioned above:
It is one of a handful Krups appliances my parents bought in the sixties. Looking at their longevity obviously a good choice.
These are my old monitor audio 252s sounded great back in the day with my NAD 2030B and walker turntable and still sound good today in the garage
This is not the oldest appliance in the house. We’ve started clearing out my parents house since my mum died 2 years ago and this is a kind of historical centrepiece of the family which I now have.
My grandfather was a fruit farmer and unlike his siblings he did financially well. His focus in the post war period was to go for high quality fruits and bigger margins.
Together with having a farm (mostly apple trees) he got a shop in town where he sold his stuff. By cutting out the middleman the higher margins ended up in his pocket. This scale was from his shop.
The scale needs some fixing which I’ll get done at some point in time.
