The Who - UQHRs

My point is just that I don’t think the prices requested for these superior quality releases is off base: they clearly require more input costs with the human checks, superior materials used (including packaging), and the actual pressing operation. With limited runs, I think there’s a clear risk if they don’t sell well, they lose money.

My copy of Who’s Next arrived a couple of weeks ago and went straight in for a wash before playing. On a casual inspection, I found what looked like zinc pressed into the groove on the last track on side one. I wasn’t too worried, as one of my other records, The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the Range, also has what looks like zinc in one of the tracks. Both records play beautifully, as they are all analog. You never know what you’re going to get.

Yes I’ve had some records with strange pieces in the vinyl. It’s luck whether they affect the surface. I take risks when ordering some of these high price pressings and luckily only one had a problem that needed sorting in the past 10 years. I bought the recent Michael Jackson - Bad 45rpm from MFSL direct, it didn’t attract any customs and so cost £115 delivered instead of £175 I see in the UK and was perfect.

“I must admit that, as my cartridge got closer to the metal in the groove, I was ready to raise my arm pretty quickly, just in case there was a problem.

My copy arrived today.

It’s a lot of money for a record but it’s a great package and more importantly it sounds absolutely fantastic - a nimble and detailed bass, a sweet treble, incredible attack on Townshend’s guitar and crisp, sharp cymbals. Oh, and the piano intro to “Getting In Tune” is something to behold. And yes, the old chestnut of “not heard that before” comes into play. More than I’d like to pay, more than I should pay, but worth every single penny!

This is my eighth copy of this album, chasing down a better sounding copy. Now, if there is a better sounding version of this album out there, as my Dad used to say, I’ll show my arse in Burtons window!

I absolutely agree with all your words….

My only minor gripe, with my copy is, its a little warped, but more importantly it’s super quiet.
