Things I’ve done in the last 24 hours, version 2.0

Having developed a painful swelling on my right breast I saw the breast clinic yesterday, and had a mammogram and ultrasound, fortunately both negative. I’ll wait for the blood test results before being totally cleared, but according to the consultant it’s a common reaction to heart meds. I hadn’t realised it was possible to do a mammogram on a slim male, but it was very efficient.

We went to the Malta Museum of War today - absolutely brilliant display. The inside of St John’s Cathedral is one of the tackiest things I’ve ever seen but absolutely worth it for Caravaggio’s ‘Beheading of St John’ - sublime

Back up The Rock today. St Michael’s Caves spectacular, a must-see. O’Hara and Airey’s gun platforms well worth the climb at the Southern end. Chickened out on the Charles V wall and Med Steps etc. and trecked back to the North end of the Rock for a repeat viewing of both sets of Tunnels making sure I did ‘Jock’s Balcony’. Well worth it !

Feet are dropping off though.

Had an updated hearing test today for my hearing aids, as things were sounding a bit off and it was close to my first 2 year review after the first test (I’ve had aids for about 15 months now). As I expected, my hearing has declined a bit, so the profile for the aids has been updated and the open domes replaced with vented domes - not terribly excited about that, but needs must and all that.

It does mean that I’m now back at the adaption stage for a new hearing programme, at the moment things appear much louder and music has a lot more high frequencies coming through to adjust too.

I feel that I have the hearing loss managed as best I can and are happy about that. On the other hand, I am not excited about declining hearing and longer term implications, and can’t help but question the merits in having a high spec stereo set-up going forward. Let’s see how things sound after a few weeks.

I’m always really worried when I read this. My father lost his hearing in later life due to industrial noise and shooting. He bought the first hi-fi I experienced. Years later when the Goldring cartridge in the Connoisseur turntable was getting old he said to me “Oh, put any old rubbish in it, I’ll never hear the difference.” I replaced his cartridge with a mid-spec Ortofon only for him to declare “it’s now so easy to listen to”.

I’ve always held firmly to the belief that better hi-fi means ‘easier to listen to’ and that the effort of processing less-than-good sound quality is a burden no one should put on another or - more to the point - willing place upon themselves. In my world the people who need and deserve the clearest, most dynamic hi-fi are those with failing hearing. That doesn’t begin to take into account the mental rewards of exposure to good music and sound. Pleas reconsider. DGP

That’s a very nice and reassuring perspective thanks. I won’t do anything drastic, I know a re-adjustment to hearing aid changes take a while for the brain to ansjust along with the inevitable mental gymnastics, and your points are very well made.

Not sure if I may post a link so, instead, search the following, which opines on age related hearing loss.

I had a water meter fitted 6 weeks ago for the first time and am constantly under the cupboard checking the readings. Thinking of starting a thread so you can join in with me on my water journey.

Excellent plan, @count.d . A suggestion though: make sure you share partial facts and when people suggest to create a full overview - the only thing which really makes sense, don’t do it but point to the water company and say that the engineer agrees with you. This will keep your thread going for a long time.

Walking around Valletta in Malta yesterday evening, I came across Anthony D’Amato which claims to be the oldest record store in the world (opened 1885)

Guinness World Records gives the title to Spillers in Cardiff (1894)

I think I bought my first LP there in 1968 (ish)

There’s already issues. When they fitted the meter there was already 197L on the reading, before I’d used it. I mentioned this and they fobbed me off saying they only charge per cubic meter. Right ok. I messaged again saying that clearly the first 197L of the first cubic meter has gone. They messaged and said they’ve refunded me 49 pence for the water use. I replied saying that’s 49 pence for the water use, but you charge per L for drainage, etc, so you owe me another 60 pence. Of course I’m not bothered by either refunds and the first message was part of feedback, but it just riled me slightly, as this is yet another company like energy, insurance, etc that con/fob off customers for every single penny.

Next. I’m in credit for £120 but they’ve worked out the year’s worth of dd based on my first 6 weeks use, so the £120 will just sit there unless I use more or contact again, to get a refund. You see these patterns with just about every company you deal with. As it is, I will be using more in the summer for the garden, so I won’t be contacting them.

Obviously if I get a high meter reading issue, I’ll open a thread here for advice.

Nice view of the Straits from the balcony this afternoon with G&T mixed and some topical reading matter..

Bucketed down over Spain earlier with thunder but cleared up nicely. Enjoyed checking out Rosia Bay and the site of Nelson’s posthumous post-Trafalgar landing point earlier. Still has some of the old 18th Century victualing buildings preserved.

Departure from Seattle to Bainbridge Island this morning for a walk around the Bloedel Estate with a friend on a cool and rainy day. Not many people on the trails today and a wonderful day for some fresh air and exercise!
