This year’s Last Night

Anyone fancy interjecting their thoughts on The Last Night of the Proms, currently being broadcast live?

I thought the singer Angel Blue came across very well in her first pieces.

A pre-review of the programme, from today’s Times:

Gosh, I’m going to have to buy some of Saint-Saëns’ piano concerti…

Another great Last Night.
Angel Blue & Stephen Hough were outstanding.
TV sound via Naim … especially when the organ kicked in, Wow! it overpowered the orchestra and the room rumbled.

But I do wish they would run the whole of the Wood Fantasia on British Sea Songs. I really don’t agree cutting some just to insert some regional traditional tunes, it’s not a complete Last Night without all of them.

Agreed on both counts.

The Britten arrangement of the National Anthem amazes me afresh every year with how good it is. As does the Elgar arrangement of Jerusalem.

When I lived in London, I sometimes went to the penultimate night of the Proms to see Beethoven’s choral symphony, and always looked forward to and enjoyed that.
