Thoughts on SBL in 2025 and are they worth getting for my 72/180/HiCap

Good evening one and all,

So I have been thinking about speakers recently and I may bite the bullet and try a set of SBL. I will be using them in my 72/180/HiCap system. They are immaculate and a good price with a warranty.
What are people’s thoughts and what to look for.

Have a chat with the seller and try to find out whether they have been treated well. Can they be transported properly with all the necessary bits and pieces safely packed?
Do you have a solid brick or stone wall against which to put them?

Treated well, immaculate condition. Spotless in fact. Original packaging is mint too. Very well cared for. They will come with a 3 month warranty, so if anything arises should be fairly rapid. Delivery with specialist courier.
I also live in a flat which the walls, floors and ceilings are solid concrete.

Put them against a plasterboard wall and you will likely be disappointed. Other than that, I’d say go for it.

I have solid concrete all around me :rofl: oh and some french windows

People sometimes seem to think that glass can cause acoustic problems, but I have never found that to be the case except when it is badly supported in its frame, causing the whole thing to resonate.

The speakers will be on my forward wall with the french doors 4-5ft to the left. Shouldn’t be an issue.

Based on above then I’d go for it. You shouldn’t lose out too much if you decide to move them on.

Sounds to me like they will suit you well.

SBL’s are very open and refined. They’ll definitely be showing you what’s happening up stream.

Would recommend you experiment with how far apart they are. Also recommend not to put a large cabinet between them but not a deal breaker if domestics won’t allow.

Enjoy!

Pretty much what I was thinking. Thought they would be worth a punt. Also would be nice to hear the ‘whole’ Naim experience.

I live on my own, so I don’t have the ‘issues’ of a better half. I have a new kitchen being fitted next week, so I will be packing stuff up and have a wee move around. Basically placement of the speakers and system first and then everything else afterwards. But currently just a low TV and games cabinet between the speakers with my system in a dedicated custom rack off to the right.

Sounds good.

SBL’s are a bit of a bargain if the room suits them. I moved mine to the office (with Atom) which has a concrete floor. Just couldn’t get them sounding their best upstairs, thinner walls and a suspended floor.

If they are transported properly (i.e. completely dismantled) you may need new seals and suitable “glue” to put them back together. They definitely shouldn’t be transported assembled.

An issue that may arise is irritated neighbours if the bass beat permeates through those concrete walls, tis the nature of the boundary speaker… however my experience with 72/hi-cap/180 into Sibbles is an engaging light and fast bass with delightful detail, so it may still work out acceptable in your situation :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

The wall they will be positioned on is the end of the block, so no neighbours…just underneath. I live in a maisonette.
I was also thinking of placing them on either metal or tile plates to possibly help with vibration.

They like to be simply spiked on terra firma, no harm in experimentation but probably won’t be needed.

I wouldn’t do this.

Carpeted wooden floor SBL spikes direct, laminate floor use Naim chips.

SBLs (and SL2s) are a wonderful speaker, once setup correctly they deliver.

I think about half the walls I used the SBLs against during the 30 years I owned them were plasterboard and I was never disappointed.

Don’t worry about vibration. They don’t do excessive bass, but just right bass.

We used to live in a flat, person below and person to the side. The side neighbour said to me one day that they wanted to warn me they were having a party, but that it probably wouldn’t matter because we wouldn’t hear them over our noise. That was SBLs lol.
Mind you the down stairs neighbour said she loved the sound, made her feel part of community and not lonely, still, it also meant she heard it.
