Tony McPhee (Groundhogs) R.I.P

Just seen that Tony McPhee has passed away today. Apparently complications arising from a fall he had suffered.

Saw the Grounhogs many times. Never anything other than stunning and Tony - well how many superlatives can you think of. I remember seeing him (them) first on a live album spot that TOTP’s (I think) ran for a time. They did Cherry Red. I was sold.

Ah, that’s just so sad.

R.I.P. Tony, and thank you so much for some wonderful music.

R.I.P. Tony, thanks for many great nights at the Greyhound.

RIP Tony.

Used to live a few doors from him in the 90’s and exchanged small talk with him on the way to or from the local corner shop. Most people had no idea who he was. Nice enough bloke with talent.

Aw, crap. Bless you Mr McPhee…
One of the greats of British Blues.

Still remember the first time I heard Split - blues-rock as scorchingly memorable as my first play of Led Zep 1, or (different style, same effect) Inner Mounting Flame
Jawdropping…

RIP Tony.

Yes indeed.

Very sad. I recall he suffered a stroke a number of years ago.

Solid is my favourite album.
I’ll give it listen later, when my wife’s gone to bed, she doesn’t appreciate his vocal or guitar work. :hear_no_evil: :grinning:

Very sorry to see this news, R.I.P. Tony and thanks for all the music.

Sad news indeed r.i.p Tony

Very sad. He will be much missed and continue to be much played. May he walk easier now.

A key part of my early 70’s musical education - another sad loss of a real talent.

My past is vanishing into the void.

They played the Salisbury on Barnet High Street (long gone) in 1971. Next day I went out and bought this.

Rest easy Tony and thanks for the music.

Sad news indeed. Saw them at Brunel University about 1975 - 76 at an all nighter when Groundhogs were billed as playing their final Gig… Perhaps someone in the SU thought that their LP Split presaged their break up. All I can remember is the intensity of their playing. Sad news.

As others have said, sad news indeed. ‘Split’ was extraordinary when it was released, and remains so today - I think that ‘Groundhog’ was the stand-out track: really dirty blues guitar playing!
