We’ve now been informed that we’ll be leaving El Ferrol at 16:30 and going out to sea to enjoy the eclipse which overall seems a much better choice.

Doesn’t look at all realistic to me. Given your history of sometimes using AI for your forum posts, no I don’t believe you!

It looks like it is meant to be an annular eclipse (moon appears slightly too small), but there weren’t any in 2022.

I’m less interested in photographing the event, or even looking at the sun, than I am intrigued by what to expect from a 90% occlusion in terms of light dimming, cooling etc.. anyone?

I recall travelling down to Slapton in S. Devon for the ‘99 eclipse, chosen because it wasn’t quite as far to travel as Cornwall and has a good open view to the SE (and a couple of good pubs).

The thing I remember most, apart from the generally surreal atmosphere during the eclipse, was the reaction of the local bird population. Slapton Ley is a large lake situated immediately behind the beach, and home to many nesting birds, which must have been thoroughly confused as huge numbers of them took flight and circled around the area making quite a racket. As soon as the sun came back out they settled down again as if nothing had happened.

I was just north of Paris for the 1999 eclipse. It was in the path of totality. I can’t recall exactly what 90% was like but the light dimming was different in nature from twilight, which is very soft just after sunset. In the eclipse, shadows remained sharp due to there being some remaining direct sunlight. As I mentioned earlier, shadows through anything with small holes will show small images of the eclipse - a pinhole camera type effect.

The weather can change quickly due to the moving dip in temperature. In 1999 this lead to clouds forming shortly before totality but they parted just in time. Could go either way I believe.

I was in Dartmouth (the Gunfield) then; the memorable event was the gulls flying out of the estuary and then returning. The whole event was spoilt by someone stealing my camera and telescope.

Absolute rubbish. Polarising filters do not block UV or IR, both of which singularly or together can cause serious eye damage. If you don’t know what you are talking about you really should not be posting rubbish like this :enraged_face:

As long as you know 100% it’s a Shade 14, all is good :+1:

Yes, it will accommodate shade 14.

Dusted off my small scope (no solar filter for the reflector, plus it’s not as mobile) ready for this evening. Need to clean my eyepieces!

And at last, my wife has seen sunspots - live rather than recorded.

Not sure it’ll make her a stargazing fan (as if seeing the rings of Saturn wasn’t quite enough!)…but at least she puts up with two telescopes in the shed :slightly_smiling_face:

Currently in Oviedo where, all being well, we should get over 100 seconds of totality. Slightly hazy at the moment…

Why do I want to block uv and Ir for 10mins or so when irs around the rest of the time
They will go sufficient black to enable you to look at the sun through.

If you want to damage your eyesight then go ahead, i really don’t care. But to advise other forum members it’s a safe thing to do says more about you than the plainly wrong advice itself.
