I agree..I wanted the sonic upgrade the reduction in hum was a bonus. Ultimately I think my neighbour ditching an old fridge has resolved things….anyway that gert big transformer is now very happy.
Give it a go Mike. You can always send it back in the 60 day trial period! But do try the MegaClamp Ultra. Despite its silly name and price, this is a gem of a product. It’s easy to hear the impact on SQ too; just plug it into a spare socket next to the system. It was so obvious that both my adult kids could tell immediately listening to tracks with their eyes closed, and both much preferred the sound with their MCU plugged in. There are cheaper versions in the range but the MCU is the only one that you don’t have to send back to base to change the internals every 5 years. Spikes confined to the past, SQ unambiguously improved.
Noted. Must admit I’d not taken on board that it requires a spare socket. I may not have one. How close does it need to be?
As close as possible, or at least on the same spur/circuit. My system works off an 8 gang extension from a double wall socket. The MCU is in the unused wall socket.
I remember buying a NAD receiver from RS some 35 years ago. It hummed a lot. Returned it and picked another one up. It hummed a lot. Returned it and they plugged another one in to check. Apparently no hum but I wasn’t privy to the ‘test’. Got home and it hummed … a lot. I’ve returned it and was asked not to come back
. Didn’t have any issues with any of the amps that followed whilst at the same address.
I can not stand audible transformer noise or tweeter hiss.
Interestingly my dealer lent me a 5Si whilst my SN3 was away at Naim for its new transformer. The humming from that particular 5Si was ridiculous and far worse than on my unrepaired SN3. I suppose that Naim have to let some hummers through otherwise they would quickly bankrupt themselves of they only released units with near-silent transformers.
The same transformer can be dead silent in one home and very noisy in other one.
That was my recent experience.
My Supernait and olive Hicap both hummed loudly in my last place and was driving me crazy especially since it was a bedroom setup. Tried a DC blocker which did nothing. Since moving to a different place both are now totally silent.
