Tuner servicing

Apologies if this has been covered, but search did not assist…

I am thinking of buying a NAT05, specifically an early one with the red light. Is this something which can still be serviced by Naim or is it a doorstop if it goes wrong?

I have seen reference to other tuners no longer being serviceable, I was not sure whether it applied only to the earlier ones or included the 05.

Many thanks!

I’m sure that @NeilS can give you the lowdown on what can and cannot currently be done and what might be recommended with regard to tuner servicing.

My red light NAT05 was serviced by Naim in Sept 2021.

A new tuning head and main board were eventually fitted, after a routine service. It came back looking and sounding as new. A NAT05 is a lovely FM radio.

With not many takers here, I’d email Naim @oscpercy , about your potential NAT05 purchase. It’s what I did when I had problems with my Naim tuner, and they were very helpful.

I am on the case - I just keep forgetting to ask our tuner guy!
Will report back tomorrow (hopefully!)

Neil.

I’m curious too…I have an NAT02 in need of servicing…I thought I had read there was no more servicing of Naim tuners so definitely interested…

Excellent tuner even without servicing!

Thanks very much all and Neil, if you do hear anything it would clearly be much appreciated and not just by me!

Looks like we no longer have the tuner heads for the original Nat05.
Routine servicing will be fine though.
Depending on the nature of the (possible) fault - we may not be able to offer a fix.

Thanks very much Neil, appreciated.

I think I will leave that one and look for a newer one.

I have a NAT-05 mnfr date 2006 with the ALPS head.
Its used daily & left powered on 24/7
Question: What would be included in a service?

I would imagine that chances of the Philips head going faulty are pretty slim.

It would be the caps in the power supply and audio output stages.

Regards
Neil.

I wouldn’t worry too much. I have an NAT02, and also a Meridian 104, and just sold a Quad FM4 and an A&R TT2. All 30-40 years old. The Naim might have been serviced 20 years ago, but the others I’m sure were never serviced. They all sound fine. The Naim is the best of the pack, but the Meridian is a lovely tuner and looks really cool even 40 years on!

What tuner head does the NAT03 have ? Alps or Phillips?

IIRC it used an ALPS head.

Excellent - looks like a prop from an early 80s episode of Doctor Who/Blake’s 7/Space 1999!

As per Richards post

Its a different model and form to the 05
See pics

The first pic is the 03 and you can see the ALPS marking
The second pic is the 05
