Turntable to uniti star

Hi, I’ve just restored an old dual TT which i had previously connected via analogue 1 thought a pro-ject e phono. It all worked fine. I’ve rewired and serviced the TT and nothing, no sound al all. Tried it via a little audio pro C10 and the TT and phone are fine. Any clues? The uniti star only uses line level out (as a pre amp) and feeds via 2x psx- r into 2 x Cyrus X’s as monos.

It’s driving me nuts! So it must be something silly I’ve missed. Thank you.

What happens if you connect speakers to the star? Or easier, can you hear anything via headphones?

Hi Robert, hi haven’t tried that so far, worth a shot. But logically surely a TT should work so long as the signals ok going in? G

Maybe it’s too obvious, but I assume the phono stage is connected to the analogue input and the X powers to the preamp output.
Can you disable the analogue input in the Naim app?

Have you got the Analogue RCA inputs for the Star turned on?

Hi Both, so the phono stage output goes into analogue 1. I can’t see any on/off option in the app other than to choose the output as analogue 1 or 2 digital etc etc.

The output from the naim is the level level into the X and all plays fine through KEF metas.

System settings, input settings, analogue.

Thanks HH, I never knew this existed, but it is/was enabled. I switched it off and then on again…same issue.

Just to be clear - if you play a CD or internet radio, you get sound out of the speakers?

And you have your power amps connected to the two ‘preamp output’ RCAs and your turntable’s phono stage is connected to the two RCA ‘analogue input 1’ sockets?

Do you have anything else you can connect to input 1, such as a CD player, to double check whether the input is working?

Hi HH, yep radio, cd etc work.

Amps connected to RCAs ok.

Phono output into analogue1

I don’t have anything else i can try…

Have you tried connecting the Dual direct, without the phono stage? It will obviously be really quiet but if it works when you turn it up you’ll know that the TT is ok and the input is ok, and points the finger to the phono stage.

Phono stage switched on?

Thanks Both, So the TT and phono stage works when plugged into my little audio pro c10, actually sounds really good given I haven’t set the TT up fully yet…

Could be a faulty relay on the analogue input, so it doesn’t activate.
Do you have a phono to din interconnect?

If you are using the same RCA cable that works with the C10 when you plug into the Star, we seem to be back where we started, ie there is something up with the RCA input on the Star.

Have you tried adjusting the input trim? It might have been set to -10.
Also, is AV fixed volume set correctly?

Hi Everyone, So I tried plugging the TT directly into analogue 1 - not a squeak!
Have looked at the input trin - was set to the midpoint.
AV set to off, but toggled between them to see - got a fuzz and static but noting else.
Have ordered a DIN/RCA but have a feeling the Venerable Hungry Halibut has nailed it - there’s a problem with the analogue side on the Star. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks all for giving your time. Hugely appreciated.

Just ensure you have an RCA to Din, and not Din to RCA. The former is wired to the input pins on the Din, which is what you want, while the latter is wired to the output pins, which you don’t want. If in doubt, a four RCA to Din will cover all bases. Fingers crossed!

HI All, so I have spoken to some great people and I was just packaging up my Uniti to go back to Naim. Kudos to Mike Manning HiFi and Gulliford Hifi - both have been simply amazing in their support and advice. Just as I disassembled the cables etc it all there it is - “default or floating ground” switch…and I thought, Ive never changed this that I can think of…but I switched it to floating and the TT works and for a 50year old Dual it sounds very good. I hope someone can explain why, but surely someone cleverer [in Naim] should know to check this early doors. Anyway, thanks to all you lovely people for helping. Cheers Happy Ears.
