I currently have an NDX2 and Supernait 3 with Neat Momentum SX5i speakers in a second system.
I’m wondering if anyone has moved from this classic set-up maybe to a New Classic combination and considered it a real upgrade?
I’m planning to have a listen of course but I’m interested in your thoughts.
Also, I wonder if anyone has compared the SX5i to the newer Neat offerings of a similar size?
This system is in Sydney Australia my dealer here is Audio Genesis.
Hello Blythe
Harry is my dealer also of some 35 years he’s a great man , not many left that give his level of service
Yes I’m currently also using the NDX2 with the SN3 but also XPS2 on NDX2 and HICAPDR on SN3
Good question from you as I’m in the same boat if upgrade is on the cards in the future.
If you want to keep it to a 2 box set up I think the key might be to wait for a replacement for the SN3, I’m sure one will come. I believe the NSSS 333 streamer is a very worthwhile step up from the NDX2 and so it should be for $16k. I’m hanging on to see what happens re SN3
With regards to the speakers , the Nest Motive range has been discontinued, the floor standing Elites and getting really good reviews and there are a couple of new ones to appear soon called JET you can read on Neat website. Definitely worthwhile checking out the new ranges.
The NDX2/SN3 is a wonderful combo so it’s a big task to improve on this without breaking the bank.
Cheers
Before the arrival of the New Classic products the 2 box alternative would have been the 272/250, and my advice would have been to stick with what you’ve got. There was one proviso - the 250 was a significant improvement over the power amp in the Supernait, and if your speakers were demanding, that could tip the balance in favour of the 272/250.
Fast forward to the current New Classic range, and the new 250 is, to my ears, a significant step up from the previous 250DR. I would say that the 222/250 is a real step up from the NDX2/Supernait. I confess that I haven’t done a proper dealer demo of those two systems in the way I did with the old NDX2/Supernait vs. 272/250DR, but still I would be confident that the New Classic stuff can deliver.
Alternatively, wait for a New Classic Supernait if you want. It might arrive tomorrow, next year, in 5 years, or never.
I’ll be an optimist Chris and say SN replacement mid 2025 ha
Yes I’m sure the 222/250 is a very fine combo indeed
I much prefer a streamer on its own with an integrated amp but that’s just me
A separate streamer has its advantages in terms of versatility. In particular I like the option to run it into a separate DAC, but then you’re into more than 2 boxes.
For me the Supernait was great paired with an NDX2, but with a better source I never enjoyed it as much and felt that a better source really needed a separate pre/power amp. Others will no doubt disagree.
The 222 into a 250 is kind of where I’m thinking but, I guess a third box might not be out of the question; possibly space for the NPX300… (I say this having just inspected the new cabinet that’s being installed in our new apartment)
I first used Harry York’s services back in early 1999, so quite a few years now.
However, I just know that if he were to say “stick with what you’ve got” I am sure my ears will agree.
Another option is possibly to keep the NDX2 and add a pre-power combination as a three box system.
I moved from NDX2 - XPSDR - SN3 - HiCap
To 222/250 and have just added a 300
I find it a very good upgrade, the 222 is more than capable as a streamer and phono stage
Well if you went for a 3 box system Blythe and wanted to keep it in the old classic mould I guess that would be
NDX2 with the 282 preamp and 250DR ( need the little napsc to run the 282 that comes with it and can be tucked away)
If go with new classic 3 boxer would be NSS 333/332/250 which would be rather tasty I would think
Now into the big cash splash
The NDX2 into 252 Supercap and 250 is sweeter than 282 BUT, it’s a second system and I should exercise some restraint!
The 333 etc. might be just pushing things a bit too far…
I just looked at the Neat Jet range and they look lovely and would certainly suit our new apartment aesthetically better than my current SX5i Neats…
Oh dear, I fear this might become a big expense for me…
Yes the 252/SCDR/250DR is a cracker , I have that in my main system with the LP12 40 anniversary TT with a pair of Neat Ultimatum XLS’s interchanged with the Neat Petite 30 anniversary’s (system in another location outside Sydney 100km south).
Like you I need to restrain myself on the streamer side of things so in no hurry at this point in time, will wait to see if a SN3 replacement transpires
I feel you will pay a lot of money to go for 222/300/250 and have not night and day difference.
But if you want to stay with 2 or 3 boxes , there’s not a lot of choices.
In your case, I would add a 555 dr and be done.
Or sell all, buy a Bartok Apex and active ATC.
NDX2/SN3 to 222/300/250 is absolutely a night and day difference.
For a low box count NC “second system” maybe consider 222 + active speakers. With, for example PMC or ATC active options.
For two boxes, then 222 + 300 + active speakers
Just a thought
Good luck
R
Have you heard a Bartok Apex with active ATC’s?
Nearly, the limited edition stand-mount SCM20 ASL fed by dCS Rossini Apex at my dealers, earlier this year, which was very good but I preferred my set up - smoother, deeper and not as analytical but get how some may prefer the ATC/dCS combo.
You would also need a Hicap for the 282, so you’re up to 4 boxes. If you want to stick to 3 boxes there’s always 282/200 which can be used without Hicap.
I’m also thinking of upgrading my Naim Nova and Innuos Zen MK2 but still keeping my Dynaudio Heritage Special. Have thought if 222/250 could be an idea or wait for Supernait 4 and streamer from Naim. Innuos was supposed to come out with new products in the new year and it will be without a CD ripper, which I don’t need either
Not, but I guess the OP will first hear it before buying. Some members have that here.
