Unhappy with the new NAIM update

It is that and variation in certain systems which lends me to think it could be a tolerance boundary issue on certain products…
As I say it would be dismissive to assume this is simply taste related.

Having lived with it for quite a while now, I’d say the latest FW works better for 95% of music on our system. Vocals and live performances are astonishingly good.

But when it goes wrong the treble energy is quite fatiguing to listen to. It’s not genre specific, it can be dance or metal or indie. It does tend to be higher tempo music with high density.

No complaints about bass here.

If naim can dial back whatever causes excessive treble we’ll be very very happy with the sound of our system. For the 95% of music it’s as good as it has ever been.

Indeed on this release, I have no complaints on the bass at all, but I also don’t have a fatiguing treble which I am unfortunately very sensitive to, as when stressed I am susceptible to hyperacusis… so I tend no notice this things in recorded music and hifi. (And elsewhere, waking up in the night when an owl hoots a quarter a mile away can be irritating…) Now I am using a non Naim DAC that might be avoiding the fatiguing treble… but interesting it doesn’t insulate me from all the differences in firmware sounds

No lack of stability here. I’ve had my streaming system for nearly five years now and have been through all of the updates since day one. If my system was all over the shop I would’ve chopped it in for something else. I wouldn’t be hanging around for another ‘patchwork’ update, life’s too short.

Stability is the big issue for me as well. I’ve had days where it’s sounded great and days where it just sounds ‘broken’. And it’s always the same SQ fault. Stridency on certain high frequencies and the bass is just an overblown muddy mess!

Both annoying and embarrassing when you have friends over for the evening and you have to tell them they can’t listen to the system because it has a fault! I can still hear the echo of…”how much did it cost again”!

I’ve had exactly the same. The same album could sound lovely one day and horrible the next.

I remember having this same experience when I had my slimline active system. I very rarely could get the thing to sing. It drove me nuts. Good one day, horrible the next. I feel sure, even to this day, that I had an unknowingly bad connection somewhere. When I completely changed my system all my woes went away. Sorry, I know this is of no help, just sharing an experience I once had with my Naim. Never again.

P.S One good came out of it all; I learned how to solder NAC A5 to an acceptable standard…:grimacing:

Listening now to Paradise Radio (main mix) and it’s sounding superb.

I think the FW did initially sound good to me. Not sure I’d call it an improvement just something a bit different. Some music though is challenging to listen to now, especially if it’s turned up a bit.
I recently added the Ndac to my system and I think increased the amount of challenging albums.
I’d love to be able to roll back and check my thoughts but can’t. What I can do is make sure before I take another update that I do it in the middle of a listening session so I am more aware of any changes - good or bad. I think last time I just gave no thought and it takes a while to sense something isn’t quite right.

Me too, but I’ve always put that down to me rather than the system.

Use of numbers is erroneous (cross-talk, confirmation bias, and sampling issues). “Some people” is the only way to state it accurately.

Many Phoenixnet users in the mix. Maybe the clock oven isn’t stable enough.

Yeah - sometimes it makes me laugh
Perfectly working before … FW changed at streamer and not working any more … where to search? Switch … caveat: ironic! Or not?

And it is even more fatiguing (to me) than listieningto the system, that in this endless discussion there is still some thought, that all taste or “mind game / hysteria” related.
The some people (who have mostly never seen or talked to each other) hear exactly the same.

Now we know (there are definitely some hints one that) that naim is working on it.
Lets all accept for a moment (only a moment) that there is an issue

True words! If the patch does not patch - this is likely to happen.

I had the same moment last weekend with a friend coming over I hd not seen for years. One of first words WOW - there has something happened with your stereo! Please let me hear…
And at second song his cloth ears fully hit the spot - nice tempo, but so sharp at the top end… And the how much question was next…

Agreed, there is an issue and it’s great if Naim is working on it. Disagree that people haven’t talked to each other, 1,775 posts and counting is evidence to the contrary. Might be a minor point to those who can’t listen to music as much as they would like or as enjoyably as they would like (what with the nonce adverb), but … Love.

Translation error on my side - meant they have not talked to each other in person

Unlike my NSS 333-NPX 300 the sound quality on my Uniti Nova is better than ever after the last update. Strange!
