Unhappy with the new NAIM update

Thanks for the transparency and honesty. Super helpful.

It makes sense as the update did demonstrate created clarity.

So how for example could the vocals (actually the treble overall) have been so impacted?

Shrill is the word that came to me.

As that effects were noticed by some and not all for the previous firmware, and indeed some found that firmware was one of the best sounding builds released for their products. I understand it had been noise profile tuned. My supposition is that it was specifically tuned for peak performance for certain products - but because of the production tolerances in these products - it could be that the noise shaping instead of having a compensating benign effect - it instead added to the noise in a negative sounding performance way for some products. I repeat that is only a supposition.

The latest release was not explicitly noise profile tuned so I understand.

Thanks - thought I was the mad outlaw here.
The difference is so much prominent and sadly it ruined all my extensive and expensive (fine) tuning.
When I have known that FW can have such effect - I would be still on 3.8. I never listen to radio and have no tidal. For me the new fw brings nothing, except the more shrill sound.
On the good side, there is more detail and air and punch (percussion) with a big BUT… guitars are too artificial…

So it was for naim (in my period with naim streaming) as well - 3.10 was the first time where this happened. But why?

I even thought you were the mad outlaw  until this morning and I experienced a direct back to back comparisson on a way less sensitive system than my main room. So you are no longer the ā€˜lone nut’ - you have a partner!

But does it help to have a partner? It always helps😊
There is nothing broken with the fw - but it is not the streamer anymore I bought and demoed for a longer period in may 2023. I never had bought him with this more ā€ždigitalā€œ sound.

That is my reflection too. There are some real beautiful things in terms of detail, separation etc… but it is different.

Detail and separation is fine - but for the cost of sounding artificial and shrill is too high. Detail is not all - is it?:smiling_face:

No and actually if can be too attention grabbing and draining actually. The vocals on some tracks were not easy to listen to and I stopped drinking so its not a Christmas hangover

I think @Cohen1263 is paying a visit to Naim. Maybe he can influence some changes with firmware debacle.

I will continue with Limetree testing where possible and comparison with firmware patch.

Are you @Cohen1263 ?

He is on the case. Read some of the other topics and you’ll see what’s going on.

I need to have options - currently exploring them…

  1. omega instead of sigma (3k) —> will it be enough, I doubt that - but will see

  2. innous pulse as bridge (3k) —> rack space very critical

  3. aavik 580 as transport into nd555 DAC (2ps) (20k) —> expensive!

  4. aavik into nDAC 555ps - sell nd555 plus 1ps —> still expensive but…

  5. linn …

Have not heared any streamer and I am a bit afraid, that they all will not bring the full organic naim sound I love so much …

Yes before the end of January Drago.

Yes, but you have us backing you up and maybe mine and @Dragos stories to tell.

I believe myself and @Drago are very loyal to Naim and our systems being newcomers to 500DR kit have changed with firmware debacle. Yes patch is better.

See how you get on.

My gut tells me, that there are still some others who would go back to 3.8 in an blink of an eye.
We are loyal but as are all the others  - but we are definitely king :yum:

I wish I had a better IT understanding. I can only express my view on how 3.8.8 sounded and what I feel is lost in my system even with 3.10.1. If 90% of Naim streamer owners prefer the latest update then my hands will be tied.

I can work with the Limetree and patch is better. There is alot going on in my mind with system. And my mind needs to settle.

As @drago knows, that can be very difficult.

Naim did the patch and tried which goes a long way.

Rob,
You can only pay them a visit! If they don’t listen, then that’s how it is.

Even if 10% remains it is too much IMO. But we hd this discussion before here
I vote for rollback for the few… but I know…
This would be so much less stressful and less costly for me. Investing much to get my sound back feels strange, but so it is
