Hope you did not assume I was calling you a horse.
Knowing that future products are not normally discussed in public, we will learn of new products as they announce them publicly.
That said, seeing what appears to be a renewed interest in the integrated products, I would think if there were a future Naim music server it would have a better home in that line.
I have owned a Core for around 6 years and have been very happy with it. Like many here I use computers at work all day, and just wanted the simplicity of easy CD ripping and cataloguing. As well as easy naim app use.
However I hardly use it anymore due to Qobuz. The sound is superb and the app is excellent. If the Core eventually becomes a door stop due to lack of functionality, I would not really care. I must add I only have 700 albums ripped and hardly any classical ones.
I agree with your comments However, the fly in the ointment, is that not all album releases are on Tidal and Quboz. Unless your musical taste only encompasses Kylie Minogue and Taylor Swift
Another delighted Core user here. I am also a fan of the App. I am amazed that both products get so much stick here on the Forum. Perhaps I have just been lucky?
For all happy Core supporters. Wait until you see the replacement and honestly say, hand on heart, that you think the original was better. The world of digital audio and also what Naim will have learned, has moved on…….look at the product competition.
I wonder if they ever considered making an entry level Core for the Muso range which would also work with the higher end or Uniti streamers?
Does anyone recall a missed opportunity with the Uniti series which when originally announced were supposed to have the ability to rip CDs via an attached USB optical disc. Strongly suspect that never happened as it would eat into Star/Core sales.
Thats the $1,000,000 question! Naim never states in advance. And as announcement of withdrawal is rare, it suggests there won’t be in the immediate future. If there is, they onow exactly what they have to compete with (e.g. Melco and Innuos), and would need to be confdent at beating.
Before the announcement of its withdrawal, I was thinking of replacing my hard drive which is plugged into the rear of my Nova, with a Core. I currently use a QNAP to rip CDs, which is not always connected to my network, hence the use of a HD.
I am able to manipulate the metadata and store the track information quite easily with the QNAP, so I was hoping that the benefit from a Core might come from an improvement in the audio quality with such a shift.
Grateful to hear if anyone has made such a change.
I very much disagree that ripping is “dead”. Definitely not for me. I listen almost entirely to my own collection of ripped and downloaded CDs. I do subscribe to Qobuz but use it almost entirely to preview something I want to buy… I believe in owning the CDs I like. And I do buy quite a lot of used CDs. I buy used because they only have to pass through a ripper once. I do feel a bit foolish keeping my acquisitions, but for now I can afford the space in my garage and they act as a backup in case I lose my music files.
Stray thought…I listen entirely to albums, never to tracks. I’m wondering if those who tend to listen to tracks have different feelings about needing to own the CD.
I am beyond dismayed that Naim is discontinuing the Uniti Core. I do have sort of a love/hate relationship with it because I think it could be so much better, but I still use it, both to rip my many new acquisitions and to stream them before I pass them on to Roon. But right now I am waiting for Naim to fix some bugs and I will be really really upset if they don”t fix them…!!!
I did not say that ripping is dead, I said that most people have ripped their CDs. Like you, I do like to own a physical copy of my music whether it be CD or vinyl. However, I do stream from my ripped files as well as using Tidal.
I would normally say, ask Mystic Meg. However, she is no longer with us.
If Naim do not replace the Core, then the only stand alone source they can demonstrate/sell is the CD5si, besides using Tidal and Quboz on their streaming products.
Perhaps that is the future strategy of the Vermont group. The world of streaming music services has certainly grown and evolved over the last ten years. CD sales continue to fall. It maybe not worth Naim’s effort to pursue this anymore. Look at the Naim product range for tuners and CD players, virtually dried up.
However, if they do, besides sounding very good. It must have a lot better software (something akin to ie. Innuos Sense). It must have a greater ability to edit metadata (again at a level of Sense and approaching Roon). A CD USB ripper input, if a disc drive cannot be sourced for internal use. The ability to be able to run Roon Core. USB and a direct ethernet output ie. separate to Lan input. Easy customer access, for changing of drive ie. not having to be returned to Naim. I have probably missed something, but I believe the above is a minimum pre requisite for Naim releasing a replacement for the Core.
As they say, time will tell.
I can’t answer your question because like you I almost invariably listen to complete albums. However my reason for retaining the CDs after ripping is primarily a legal one, which might also be applied by those who primarily listen to isolated tracks. Yes, they are also a backup of sorts, though probably not as robust as having a backup copy of the files elsewhere.
But needing to own a copy of the music, as opposed to the physical media, is another matter, my primary reason bing because I do not want the risk of being deprived of the ability to play the music I love whenever I want. I wonder if this applies more to people who listen mainly to hwole albums?
I’m sorry that Naim are discontinuing the Core. I think mine sounds very good, but believe that Naim should have dealt with the various limitations of the product rather than withdrawing it. We can speculate on why and it does seem odd both to end production of CD players (almost) and not to have a highly capable CD ripper.
I wondered if I could introduce a side issue. I am gradually ripping my CDs and want to store them in the loft, but I cannot find anything very suitable to put them in. I have a lot of CDs so that metal cases that might hold 30 or 40 CDs are not viable in terms of cost. On the other hand I can’t find cheaper plastic boxes that are a suitable size. I do want to keep the standard plastic cases and not just the CDs and leaflets. They will be indoors so damp and cold proof boxes are not necessary. If anyone has an answer to this I would be very grateful to hear.
