Uniti Nova pre-out issue: is my DIN4 cable wired correctly?

Hi all,

I hope someone here can help me with an issue I’ve run into with my Uniti Nova.

After using it as an integrated amplifier with great pleasure, I recently purchased a McIntosh power amplifier to use with it. That’s when I discovered that the RCA pre-out on the Nova doesn’t work. My dealer contacted the importer, who confirmed the RCA output is indeed faulty and that fixing it would require a full new PCB.

As an alternative, they offered to sell me a DIN-to-RCA cable for €200. I declined, as that felt steep, especially given that the RCA output has in all likelihood never worked (I had no reason to test it while using the Nova as a standalone integrated).

I ended up buying a cheaper DIN4-to-RCA cable instead. The build quality looks decent, but I’m getting a strange result: there is audio, and I can clearly hear music playing, but the sound is very low in volume and has almost no bass. Other sources connected directly to the McIntosh sound perfectly fine with strong bass.

I’ve done some research online and on this forum about the correct DIN4 pinout for the Naim pre-out, and from what I’ve found it seems like the wiring on my cable is correct: the left and right signal (+) wires go to the two upper pins (i don’t know if I am correct with L and R, but in any case both positives each go to a dedicated pin), and the ground wires from both RCA connectors are joined together and connected to a single pin (with one pin left unconnected). But I’m not 100% sure, and I’m wondering if I’m missing something.

For reference, I’ll attach a photo of the DIN4 connector so you can see exactly how it’s wired.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could the wiring still be wrong despite what I found, or is there something else that could explain the weak, bass-light sound? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The DIN4 output socket is wired like this:

CH1 = Left CH2 = Right

The fault that is affecting the RCA preout is likely going to influence the DIN preout, as they are very closely related.
It probably just needs a new relay.

Do I understand correctly that I don’t use the +ve in my case and the grounds of both the channels should be connected to -ve?
In that case the cable seems to be connected to the din4 plug correctly.

My dealer tested the DIN → RCA cable that the (Dutch) importer soldered on my unit and the dealer told me it worked. It could be that they tested it briefly and the issue I am facing was there as there is sound coming out, but they were quite clear in advise to go for a din→ RCA cable. I don’t think going back to them to check it again, or ask to repair will really sort effect as the importer clearly told them the whole PCB needed to be replaced to get the RCA working.

What do you advise me to do?

I would contact our support department & discuss your options with them, especially if the unit is still under warranty.
