How often to the stand alone streamers such as the 555, NDX2, ND5 etc get updated and do they suffer the same sonic changes every time too?
I think there has been one release, no sonic changes to my nd555.
So I wonder how they achieve that with a 555 and cant seem to with the Unitis?
Judging by the Beta testing Naim and Beta users did not find any SQ concerns. Have you tried a factory reset, if that did not help contact Naim. They will be blissfully unaware of yours and others concerns until they are told.
I bought a Star just as the 2.6 firmware was released, I remember all the contempt for the new firmware on the old forum, I updated it to 2.6 straight out of the box so I never got to compare myself, however this new version seems to be more positively received at least.
I now have a Nova and it’s definitely an improvement in terms of sound quality.
Personally I hope that over the next few years, updates will continue to improve the SQ.
When you think about it, a company like Naim that has some amazing reference products that most of us would need a mortgage to buy, should have a few tricks up its sleeve technology wise, that can be fed down the HiFi food chain by firmware updates to the lower end kit, a bit like Formula 1 Tech eventually reaches the cars we all drive.
Improvement over the Star, or improvement with the new software update?
I think because Unitis are all-in-one, it is very hard to do any adjustments (including functional) without affecting sound quality. Any tiny adjustment affects CPU and cache usage and it in turn affects electricity usage and produces different amount of electricity noises, and it somehow affects analog parts of signal processing. Separates should not have such problem I think.
In my opinion after any functional adjustments Naim has to reprogram DSP module to match SQ to previous one. And it should be very hard (if possible at all) to make SQ exactly the same as in previous version.
yep I did a reset, I’ll live with it for a few days and maybe it’ll grow on me, it’s not that there’s anything wrong as such, bar a lack of bass perhaps, its just that it’s quite different in it’s presentation to it’s predecessor
Sorry, the firmware has improved the SQ of the Nova, although the bigger jump in SQ was from the Star to the Nova when I upgraded last year
Knowing Atom, I’m actually sure SQ will change more to positive in a next week or two.
As for bass, it sounds like on new Atom (out of the box) in my case, so it definitely should improve after some time. I don’t know what it is related to (new burn-in, static electricity, settle-in, etc), but seems Atom needs time to fully open, even after update.
After some listening I think this new firmware is an improvement in sq drop last one.
In fact, it is more prat : more air, cleaner and deeper silences, more subtility in timbral accuracy (that’s was the worst point in older firmware which was too systematic), a little bit more speed
Presumably you don’t have an older firmware file - if not, you are unlikely to be able to revert.
no but I’m sure I could request it if I wanted to revert, dont really want to go there though.
The question is whether or not they’ll be happy to provide it, and hence why I think having the older ones available for download would be helpful provided people use them at their own risk, and also knowing they may be less compatible with the Naim app and won’t support newer features. At some stage I guess it’s possible a firmware will come out which makes it impossible to revert for one reason or another.
I really doubt that would happen. Naim can control it well enough by not letting old firmware out except in special circumstances and not being able to go backwards would probably complicate their maintenance processes too. Also all of their products have a way to load firmware from scratch so as to be able to manufacture them and to be able to recover a product from hardware failure which could of course corrupt the firmware.

For me it doesn’t make sense to speak about old FW versions. For me is not clear why is so important. The old FW never can be better.
yes well its all a matter of having a choice, maybe if different DSP settings were available and you could choose your preference, highly unlikely I guess. It seems Naim are in complete control of how your unit sounds not only when you initially buy it obviously but in to the future too and you just have to go along with it. Think about customers who auditioned the Nova and selected a particular set of speakers that suited their taste taking in to account the sonic signature of the Nova at that time, a few firmware upgrades later and that selection may no longer be ideal for them. Anyway, I’ll reserve judgement for a few days and I might be back saying I really like it after my brain adjusts!
Exactly, makes me very sceptical…
( this would be my fourth update)
Yes I understood your point.
I am also not sure if I like the new SQ settings (sounds a little bit technical cold via UPnP and Tidal, bass is definetly reduced).
On the other hand I like it to have a “living system” so I like what Naim does.
What has change else?
