I have one of the old audiolab 8000p amps which has had some work done on it - caps etc replaced and still sounds amazing for its age - I have the unitistar piped through it into KEF Meta’s - I have the opportunity to get 2 monoblocks (true MB’s) but they’re only 30 W each side. The audiolab is ~100w per channel - my question is (and again, I’m a newbie here, so please be nice) am I likely to damage the mono’s - and is there are rule about configurations eg should the power amp be more or less in terms of output than the mono’s - I know you can hook the audiolabs to their own bran MB’s but the output is way higher. Any help would be just brill. Thank you.
Are you thinking about using the stereo Audiolab and the monos at the same time? I can’t see that would be an improvement over the existing stereo amp by itself.
You need to be much clearer about what you are proposing to do.
Just provide a simple component flow for both your existing set up and another for the proposed set up.
Mono blocks have advantages and all else being equal, monoblocks are likely to be better than stereo amps. However when considering completely different amps the question as to whether any particular pair of monoblocks is better than a particular stereo power amp sharing power supply between channels, or even an integrated amp, depends absolutely on the quality of the specific amps being compared. For any meaningful responses you need at the very least to identify exactly what monoblocks you’re talking about, and as others have said clarify what your proposed set up is because it sounds as if you’re talking about running amps together?
