Hi - I have a Unity Star streamer. I’ve got a HDD attached at the rear USB which saves files from ripped CDs and purchased Flac files. Suddenly the folder is not allowing me to copy files over to it. I have not changed anything. I can see all the previously saved files, just not add to them or edit them. The folder permissions say I have read & write access. I’m at a loss where to start diagnosing or fixing this, so any ideas welcome …
Poor @davidhendon , so often called.
Thank you FR!
@DxeySJ what computer (or to be more precise what OS) are you using to the access the HDD? How are you connecting the USB HDD to the computer?
Hello, thanks for responding. I have a MacBook air (Mac OS Monteray 12) and a MacMini (Sequoia 15). Both connect to the router by WiFi. The router is hard wired to the UnitiStar. I’ve tried both Macs to upload, no difference. However, I have just also tried ripping a CD and this also didnt work - the front screen said the disc had no tracks, and ejected it. I tried a couple of CDs with the same result. I know that I successfully ripped a CD about a month ago. As far as I can see, the all the other UnitiStar functions work OK (it plays CDs and files, internet radio works, multi-room works). Not sure where to go next! Should I send a query to NAIM?
Here is a somewhat similar topic Uniti Star won‘t rip or play CDs
I think there are two different things going on here. The CD ripping problem does indeed sound like the thread that @Pieto mentions. I think telling Naim Support about it is a good suggestion.
The downloads issue may be caused by security changes that Apple introduced a few minor firmware updates ago. The work
around that I have heard of is to add the new folder to the HDD first and then transfer the music into that folder as a second step.
Thanks again. I tried creating an empty folder but again that would not copy across. I’ve looked at the other thread - sounds like changing the storage drive might provoke it into working. There is also some suggestion that if I can change the name of the existing HDD it will then work (not sure if I can using a Mac). But I’ll summarise the problems and contact Naim with it anyway ..
You can’t “copy across” the newly-created folder because it’s the same Mac issue. What you have to do is create it in-situ in the HDD.
So navigate into your Music Store HDD and create the new folder there. Then navigate back to where your downloads files are and copy them into your newly-created folder.
This is definitely a Mac issue. I’ve recently copied to and from files from the Hdd to my windows pc. Using a usb cable with no problems at all
Same problem - ‘you do not have the necessary permissions’ to create a folder inside the drive. I don’t have any non-mac equipment … don’t think it can be due to an Apple update, though, as the laptop is no longer getting updates. The HDD linked to the Star doesn’t talk to the Mac, as I thought.
Hmm. I think ask Naim. You could try the things that are suggested in the other thread though. It does seem possible that there is some consequence of the Star 3.12 firmware update ago that affects the name of the Star’s Music Store. It obviously doesn’t affect all Stars though, as we have only seen a very few people reporting the problem here and it didn’t show up during beta testing, but then we don’t know whether any beta tester with a Star uses an HDD like you do.
You can change the name of the HDD using a Mac. That‘s how I did it and it resulted in me being able to rip again using the renamed HDD to store te rips.
Doesn’t like it. When I plug it in I get a message saying the drive can’t be repaired. I can access all the files and copy them off, just not write anything. It’s entirely possible there is a fault in the drive, it’s been on there for 6-7 years, although in my experience faulty drives just don’t work at all! I’ve just put a spare 32GB thumb drive in the back and configured it as storage - rips and transfers files no problem. So I’ll probably just go and get another 1-2TB drive. All the music files exist elsewhere in some format, might have to re-rip some CDs but …
… spoke too soon! Just ‘woke up’ the Star this morning and tried to transfer another file - got the same error message. So at least it’s not (just) a HDD failure or Apple problem, there is some sort of Naim system glitch. So I’m holding off the expense of an additional drive. Just need to get this into some sort of coherent summary to submit to customer support! (Also, yes I got the same ‘disc has no tracks’ error when trying to rip.)
Things are not improving. I am waiting on a response from Naim customer service, but in the meantime decided to try a new HDD (given that the small thumb drives I had tried worked without a hitch). I connected a new 2TB HDD, went through the configuration steps and got: ‘an error occurred whilst trying to format the disc ..’ Disc seems fine connected to computer. Very frustrating!
