Naim separates seem a bit complicated if you’re not used to how they work! Given that you already have a Hicap you may as well use it if you buy a 202, 282 or 82. As explained above, the NAPSC is an optional upgrade for the 202, but the 282 will not work without one.
I has a 202/200 for a number of years. They can be had cheap currently, but it’s not much of an upgrade on the XS, so not good VFM IMHO.
There are some used and ex dem NSC222 around which will definitely be a big step up. The 222 can connect to the NAP200, but needs a specific cable (add to the cost) How Do I connect Naim New Classic Range 200 Series to Legacy Products? — Audio T
Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions! Based on your input and doing a little reading, it sounds like my next upgrade should be a NAC-282. I found one but it’s from the UK and the NAPSC will have to be rewired to work in the US.
My question is - Must the NAC-282 have to be rewired if I purchase it from Europe that works on 240V?
Just want to confirm before I buy. Thanks!
The 282 itself does not plug into the mains, it is powered by the separate power supplies.
Therefore the 282 is not country voltage specific.
The external power supplies are country voltage specific. (Napsc, Hicap, Supercap)
Hope this helps?
Are you sure? Not in my experience…
I moved to a used 252/300 - the difference over the 202/200 was staggering. I wouldn’t buy a 202/200 used, there is much better value now all OC used prices have fallen so much.
I don’t doubt that - but that’s not the OPs question is it? I had a 202/200 and it’s a fine combo. I would offer that anything beyond this will only show its worth without a very significant front end upgrade over what the OP has.
Some say the SN2 was quite on par with the 202/200. So over an XS2 , it can’t be night and day.
I agree the front end needs work too.
If it were me I would simply get an ex dem Uniti Atom HE and some active speakers in this circumstance if the OP wants a bang for buck total upgrade…… otherwise you’re into 282/250 and an NDX2 to be a significant uplift IMHO
The xs2 is the weak link in the system. Replace that first or aim for a new system to work towards including a pre amp upgrade.
This is good advice. I think current used prices for 282s make it an ideal upgrade to your system. It suits the NAP200 well, I know as I ran the two together for quite a few years. Introducing and upgrading the power supplies to one and then two hicaps and ultimately a Supercap was not as jaw dropping as the first time I replaced my Nait XS2 with the 282/200.
So you’ve heard the NAC-282 and NAP-200 together? That’s the upgrade I’m considering.
Do you think it would be “jaw dropping” over my XS2/NAP200?
BTW, Didn’t there used to be a used classifieds section on this forum?
Besides eBay, can someone recommend where I can find a used NAC-282?
pink fish media or a naim dealer in the UK.
Thank you!
Thanks again for the feedback and suggestions! Based on this, I’m looking for a NAC-282.
Is there a particular year I should consider or are the years pretty much the same? Looks like they’ve been making this for a while.
Yes for quite a few years with the 200 powering the 282. It really is a superb bit of kit in the Naim tradition of speed and timing plus having a fuller sound than the integrateds and lower amps like the 202. The fact is many folk ran it with a Supercap and 300 power amps rather than go to the 252.
I am not so sure about that.
A Nac202/NAP200 on their own is better but not a great deal on their own with the NAC202 powered from the NAP200 but if you add NAPSC and Hicap to the power the NAC202 it makes the combo into something else entirely and an excellent setup that will knock the socks off an XS2
A NAC282 is better again.
The NAC202 is much cheaper used and all the OP would have to do is get a NAPSC with it (quite reasonable used) and keep the Hicap already in the system.
After a quick initial search, a used NAC-282 is within my budget. Given that, would it be worth the extra cost over the 202?
BTW, I’ve seen some used SuperNait 3 units out there. How would this compare against a NAC-282/NAP-200?
