What are you suggesting Lindsay, I really can’t imagine…

After the first flush of voters, we have a small majority (52%) on an upgrade path of one form or another, some expecting to upgrade in the short to medium term, others longer term. 39% are expecting to stick where they are indefinitely and 7% are expecting to downgrade sometime, though only 1% (that is one person at the moment) in the short to medium term. That said, 79 voters is a very small sample, representing just those two noticed this pole and felt inclined to answer. Hopefully there will be many morein due course.
The intention might be real even if the reality pans out differently.
Office System : unchanged for 10 years
Main system 1 : unchanged for 9 years - though I added a turntable 2 years ago nothing was upgraded
Main system 2 : unchanged for 5 years - though I added a turntable 4 years ago, nothing was upgraded
I think I’m pretty good at just leaving things how they are. It’s always possible I might tinker with the kitchen system I suppose and downgrade the speakers to something easier for the amp (downgrade to upgrade). I suspect the poll is about our main system though.
If I get some time I may give the system an early spring clean - it always makes it sound better.
I know I said that I’m done and there will be further upgrades to either system but, I will potentially be upgrading my record cleaning solution(s) come the new year.
Currently run a Project VCS (10 years old), looking at a Okki Nokki One and/or HummingGuru Nova.
My Nait50 is warming up after its long and cold journey south. Even so, sounds pretty good on headphones (hooking up the speakers and rearranging Fraim is a day-off job) - IF the music proves a high percentage of my 252/300/HPA setup… then I guess I’ll be “down grading” - but I see it more as down-sizing for the living room revamp in spring.
Plus, I’m not willing to submit my wife to the drudgery and stress of packing and selling a big system once I’ve fallen off the perch!
Do you mean as it relates to only my Naim system or one of my five others?
If she doesn’t want to do that she can just take it to a recycling centre or if they don’t want it a waste disposal site…
Now that’s a question I hadn’t considered in setting up the poll! Your current best/highest sound quality one, doesn’t matter what brand or brands are involved.
I’ll amend intro details.
Just get some ear protectors ![]()
Hmm, couldn’t vote. I changed my whole system not long ago. Better sound, less boxes (6 becomes two), smaller cost (based on original RRP). So is that an upgrade or a downgrade? Sometimes, less can be more.
Why’s that AC? Neither can be as loud as my current 10 year old Project VCS…![]()
As the opening post said, the criterion being up or downgraded is sound quality, so If better sound it is an upgrade (money and number of boxes are immaterial).
That’s exactly what I meant - mine’s like a jet taking off! ![]()
She’d probably sell it on Vinted. Lol.
But why would/should she junk it? We ain’t made of money like some, so a couple of grand would be nice for her.
I wasn’t suggesting she should, but she could if it was too much hassle to sell it. My observation was simply that someone finding it a drudge and stressful packing and selling a big system has that simple alternative option.
Voted “Stick- that’s it”. Although there is a vague possibility of trying out some different speakers in the future; more out of curiosity than anything else.
Have actioned my poll response! ![]()

I think even she would balk at throwing Naim stuff in the bin. Much more likely the record collection! Get rid of all that nasty free jazz of which she is decidedly not a fan.
My recent posts have details of my upgrades. I’ve already aquired some of the upgrades which will be commissioned in the New Year following a system teardown and general clean/tidy up.
Interesting, although not surprising, that so many people are on the upgrade path. I thought the hifi industry was dying on its feet generally. We used to have several higher end hifi shops in town and now have none. If you need hifi the only option is a RicherSounds shop but the hifi side is very much second fiddle to their home AV systems. I think they may do some Naim single box solutions, or at least they used to do, but I’m not sure about that anymore.
I think our systems are probably more than people are prepared to pay for a home music system. Our hobby is not a cheap one is it. I don’t like discussing it with non-fellow hifi enthusiasts because they’d just think I was daft spending so much money on it when they have Spotify on their phone and a blue tooth speaker that sounds fine to them.
