Upgrade Time.....Some Advice Would Be Welcome

Late to the party but - Exactly what I would (did) do. Great result.

As I read on that is the path you are on.

@Lightfoot hope you dont mind if I use your thread for a quick question:

Has anyone here experience with upgrading from 282+Nap250Dr+HicapDr to Luxman 509z?

Space limitations prohibit the “more boxes” upgrade path of Naim, hence I am thinking of going for a premium integrated to nurture Sonus Faber Guarneri Tradition speakers. There is not so much info on the 509z in previous threads.

Why not Gryphon Diablo 120?
The Luxman with Sonus Faber will be at the opposite of the Naim sound. Mellow, Mellow, and mellow.

Good point. Gryphon looks like a racing car :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: indeed. For some time, i thought I need a more mellow presentation than my current system. But recently my system is so balanced that enjoy the Naim sound a lot and now afraid of loosing it. Just would like to have a bit more depth and space in the soundstage. I was thinking of changing to NC333 and NC250 without the power upgrades (no space). But my dealer said Luxman 509z will sound better and i like the idea of having a one box solution that also comes with a good headphone amp. Dealer also said it will not be mellow. He made me a good deal for trading in my Naim system. That’s why I am asking here…torn…

@Lightfoot hope you will find this conversation interesting

Hi, Luxman is sounding very nice and that integrated has a lot of praise. It will be certainly ahead on some aspects vs what you have.
However I find that Sonus Faber need some very energetic amps to awake. I heard several times the Sonus Faber and like them. With Bryston, Naim, and Jeff Rowland it was a good match.
With Macintosh I was sleeping. I fear it will be the same with Luxman, because both are going in the same direction.
But you will see. Be careful, a dealer is a dealer, even if nice.
What is sure is that you won’t have the urgency and immediacy of Naim.

Hi, have you resolved this issue?

3 weeks ago I had the same problem, 1 channel suddenly disappeared, I tried a known good din cable from my CD player and still the same, switched to rca using some old cables and everything fine on both channels. Like you I searched the forum and found that the concenus seemed to be a faulty relay, still being under warranty my dealer returned NDX2 for factory repair and sure enough it was a relay fault. Quite common according to dealer.

In my case it seems that it was the cable, fortunately. I was able to borrow one and immediately got sound through the two channels. I’d just like to thank everyone for their help in this matter.

That Luxman is an exceptional amp!

Brilliant news that you worked through this. Pity the HiLine is duff.

Now you can get down to enjoying your new NDX2!

Glad you sorted your issue, but I personally would be wary of moving to Luxman after years of loving the Naim sound. I have run olive 82/250 for years, but have spent time with 252/300 and 552/250 and more recently 332/350 and in my view 332/350 is where I am aiming. I have already upgraded to 350’s and they are truly gorgeous at any listening level into any load.

My reasoning is simple, the new 300 series still has the Naim PRAT/involvement/speed/emotion but brings a whole new level of imaging, space and air while removing the grain I can hear in both olive and classic kit.

332/300 is actually cheaper than a new 252/supercap was and it is better. The 350 has more drive and power than the 500DR and (although I haven’t directly compared them) I wonder if it is superior, if not they’re darned close. The 350’s have shocked me with their ability to deliver utterly seismic bass with such clarity and cleanliness that I have heard very little that compares. Only this week I have been listening to the Steven Wilson remix of Frankie’s “Welcome to the Pleasuredome” on the SME 35 and it’s actually awe inspiring to experience.

Factor in the fact that a 332/350 won’t need servicing anytime soon (whereas 252/300 or 552/500 might) and the cost difference narrows a fair bit.

I feel that the new 300 series is the most fundamental redesign Naim has ever made - new case designs to reduce eddy currents, much better cooling, ladder resistor volume controls rather than pots, the same transistors as in Statement, the most powerful power amp stages that Naim has ever made except Statement - it encompasses Naim’s very latest tech and everything they have learned in over 50 years of amplifier development. It represents in my view a pretty giant leap forward over what went before.

You’re in an enviable position and only you know your budget constraints. Personally at nearly 57 (this coming Monday!) I’m keen to achieve an endgame system before the salary stops coming in and I know that for me NDX2/332/350 is it. It’s so good that to better it takes ludicrous amounts of money. It’s so powerful that no loudspeaker I might ever buy (and I’m thinking big ATC’s here) will ever phase it.

YMMV,

I cannot agree more!…my 1 million kudos. 300 serie is literally redefining the idea of hifi. I ve never experienced something like that.

I ve npx2/332/250 and the 332 is a jewel. I couldn’t listen the 350 but I can say that the 250 is already fantastic. The 332 in my opinion is the jewel of the collection. I believe that a nvc frontend with a turntable will make everyone forever happy.

I didn’t audition the new Rega combo but I can easily say that in my opinion the gap with the Osiris is enormous.

@Lightfoot after reading 70 posts, the first thing in my mind is “how’s it sound!” :joy:

NDX2/555ps into a 272 vs. 272/555ps?

Pre amp is the next question. 282s are good value. If you’re looking at a 252/supercap (perhaps £3k each?). I would suggest just jumping to a 552 (it come with the power supply) and you might find one for £8-10k?

My plan has always been to skip the 252 as the additional supercap cost gets you closer to a 552.

Key here is to factoring in service costs as they are not insignificant….

I really liked my old 252/300/NDS system on reflection could have stayed there…..

Thanks again Iain

I also believe Steve said service interval on NC is longer than OC.
