I own a Uniti 1 and I stream spotify via a chromecast audio toslink through PMC GB1 speakers. Im VERY happy with this setup but I just got a cash boost of £800 and wondered if I could improve the sound.
For £800 I can pick up either a Supernait 1 (i.e. keep using the Uniti Dac) or an NDX 1 streamer (keep using the uniti amp). I wondered if anyone could advise me as to what to buy to give me maximum improvement in sound? Or, indeed if I should be looking at other Naim kit.
Hi, is your Uniti very old, and running very old firmware? You shouldn’t need a Chromecast puck for Spotify unless the Uniti hasn’t been updated as you could use Spotify Connect. Better still for sound quality, try Tidal.
I don’t think you’ll find an amp or source upgrade a cost effective way to improve on the Uniti. I would just use it as is. Of you really want an improvement, sell it and get both the NDX and Supernait.
NDX/Supernait is much more capable. However, there are risks with the old streaming platform used by the Uniti and NDX in terms of availability of spares and streaming functionality compared to the much later design of the Atom.
Does your Uniti have the 24/192 streaming board? If so it can have the firmware updated to improve functionality.
Hi,
I’ve been in same position as you. Two years ago I sold my Unit1 on the well known action site and raised c£600, then bought a really nice Atom for c£1100 on same auction site. I took a Tidal subscription and fitted NACA5 cables.
I liked my Uniti1 but Atom and Tidal have been a good upgrade
No, i did not notice a decrease in power when i replaced my Uniti-1 with an Atom. I did not do a back-to-back comparison between the two systems because i sold the Uniti several weeks before buying the Atom, i changed loudspeakers at the same time when i got an exceptionally good deal on a pair of new old stock PMC DB1+ speakers. They are small but punch above their weight. Many users have posted their experiences of using bigger and better speakers.
I am very pleased with the Atom
