Upgrading Spendor A4 Speakers

Music better each day. Details glossed over by the A4’s. Bass quite good. Highs could be better developed. Music way more textured. Day 7

I find the D7.2 to be more revealing of recording variation in albums when streaming. Some are uniformly great. Others have track to track variation, while others are more clearly just poor. Bass continues to get more defined. Highs still a bit lacking.

Hi @Jaybar, how are the highs lacking?

And do you mean lacking compared to your A4’s or your expectations?

@stavrose It’s hard to answer. The tonal balance is different. I found the A4 thinner in the highs. Far less nuanced to things like decay or hall environment. The highs on the D7.2 are far more integrated and less thin compared to the A4’s. The overall tonal balance on the D7.2 is shifted toward the lower frequencies. I am sure the sound will get better. I have about 90 hours of play time on the D7.2.

The Spendor D7.2s have been a fantastic upgrade for me. They settled quickly and, after 3 years, I still rate them very highly. Enjoy.

Still plenty time of them for them to open up. You can bank on that.

I streamed Paul Simon’s Graceland. I was spellbound by the recording and the performance. The bass was really tight. Everything was both nuanced and layered and three dimensional

That is fantastic. Glad to hear you are happy with those!

Just ordered Spendor D7.2 - very much looking forward to them. I still used my B&W 704S3 for my new SN3 - actually not bad, but I expect a WOW-effect with the D7.2 after checking them out at the dealer

Glad it’s working out. It’s a paradox of living in Manhattan. We have access to everything but usually can’t demo it at home …

@Middle Even if one listened at the dealer, stuff may sound very different at home. I generally do not audition at dealers. I have ended up with poor speakers at home too many times. I have been lucky with recent choices. Nothing more. My room is very challenging. It is safer to audition electronics at the dealer.

I am more fortunate. My currrnt dealer lived in our coop complex many years ago, so he haz some familiarity. His tech person haz been here many times and has a good sense what would work in this space.

I am very confused about my D7.2. Sometimes the highs are very natural. Other times they are dull and the sound is diffuse. Sometimes the PRAT makes me feel very engaged. Other times it’s not there. Sometimes the interplay between musicians and the acoustic environment is jaw dropping. Other times that is just not there. Sometimes images are rendered perfect. Other times diffuse. I have about two weeks of play (about 120 hours). Sometimes I need to turn up the volume slightly. Some recordings sound uniformly great. Others variable by track. What might be going on? Break in? Using a SN3 and NDX2. Both with external power supplies.

Is it varying over time with the same recordings, or just different with different music?

The former suggests burn-in (120 hrs doesn’t seem very long to me), the latter a more intrinsic issue perhaps.

A day or so ago you were loving the new speakers in various posts. Either way, patience would seem appropriate. Or do you have a 30 day return cutoff? I don’t recall you mentioning that previously.

Bruce

You can’t judge them fairly until they are fully run in. Simple as that.

I would hazard a guess that they are still bedding down. My 9.2’s were much the same. If you can try running them at a higher volume for a period.

The issue most people have with the D7.2 is that the highs, if anything, are a bit hot, dull and diffuse sounds a bit odd. They are a pretty revealing speaker so perhaps you’re now hearing the differences in source material that were masked before. What’s your streaming source? Qobuz?

Hey Jaybar, is anything else electrical on at the same time as this, thinking things like washing machines, tumble dryers etc. I only mention it as years ago my Linn system absolutely sucked when those appliances were on, with timing the thing that went most south.

I don’t find the same issues these days but totally different house and don’t have the Linn gear which was really affected by it.

Might be nothing, but just based on your description of the variation and my experience of similar.

@BruceW its from music use for running in new stuff.

@Adam1 nothing unusual electrical
