I think this is critical. What does the manufacturer say is the input they implemented best? I think this is almost certainly going to be more important to the outcome than a generilised discussion of which is better.
same here I use amazon basics optical cable into my Mscaler. no reason to change it.
As for USB vs SPDIF @Simon-in-Suffolk, I tried both, much prefer an SPDIF connection, as it was designed specifically for audio, whereas USB was not.
Ali, SPDIF standard was specifically designed for only digital audio, whether it be multi channel, stereo, mono, compressed or uncompressed PCM. Though in hifi it’s typically used for stereo PCM.
USB was developed with a more general purpose transport protocol with a host of specific application classes, and specifically USB Class 01 was developed precisely for audio and music signalling.
From a communications protocol perspective, USB prior to full duplex USB 3.2 was not ideal for low noise hifi, as signalling was achieved by breaking the twisted pair balance, thereby creating small pulses of EM energy that otherwise would need to be carefully mitigated against.
So for audio use I suggest check both interfaces work at USB 3.2 Full Duplex
