Using analogue in & optical in - advice please

I would like to connect a portable CD player to the audio in.
How would I control the volume? Eg. Using the cd’s volume control or the muso volume control? How about the optical in?

Optical should be clearly better.
If you have to use the jack, then I would set the volume of the portable CD player on max and use Muso (QB?) volume control only.
