Someone on here was asking about the Vantage vault turntable that they had seen listed in What HiFi in the 80’s. I meet Richard Enston in the late 80’s when i was trying to sell my AR turntable. I friend put me in touch with Richard who came to view my AR. We did not do a deal but Richard said he used to buy and sell HiFi and made his own turntable. He took me to his house to show me, his spare room was full of boxes of technics direct drive motors, record player lids etc. He explained to me he had designed a range of turntables starting with the red plastic based one in the pic priced at £150 minus the arm. The arm he had designed and been granted a patent cost I think £444. The range went up in price when he would replace the red plastic with wood or slate.
Back then only 5 red plastic versions sold. He had sort of given up with the venture and had designed a safety petrol tank and was selling end of line kitchen appliances. He said he had the idea of some one always wants the most expensive version of anything. He decided to list the Vantage Vault in the HIFi magazines as the most expensive turntable in the world. It was never made but if someone wanted one he was going to replace the red plastic with marble and gold plate everything.
So the vault never existed, I have lost contact with Richard but if any one wants a Vault I’m sure he would knock one up for you if you could find him and had the cash. The Vantage turntables where made in Colwyn Bay North Wales.
