I find this whole thing puzzling. Over $200 for just one reissue of Lee Morgan Sonic Boom, with a bunch of filler and fluff otherwise. This is a quick and easy pass for me.
I once had the Japanese import when it first came out, but it was lost over the years. The new reissue is a pricey, digital sourced MoFi.
Well at Ā£59 not too pricey considering single Tone poets and acoustic sounds are Ā£40 here and doubles Ā£50.
As Iāve said before the digital thing doesnāt bother me so long as I personally am happy with the sound. I havenāt read a single positive review about the OJC Portrait in Jazz otherwise I would have bought that.
Where are you seeing for Ā£59? Both Music Direct and Mofi are listing it for $120. So yeah, thatās comparable to Tone Poet and Acoustic Sounds series reissues, but I consider those superior products.
Iām not going to buy this for $120.
Back in the 90ās I purchased the long box CD edition on a trip to Canada and sold my triple vinyl copy, to my eternal regret. I should have kept it just for the amazing packaging.
My Ā£5 UA/Jazz File LP of āSonic Boomā will do me. Supplemented by the Conn CD (which has the bonus of a nice additional unissued session).
$200+ ! Who is buying this stuff? Fluff - for sure.
Itās a non starter as a conversation because we both differ strongly in our view but for your information Scott Nangle in the U.K is selling it at that price .
Iām unsure what the problem is with part digital in any music release, a lot of people get very het up if they donāt get a pure analogue recording. Personally I couldnāt care less how the sound is mastered on route to being pressed all I care about is the end product - the sound.
I understand that others like their recordings āPure Analogā but to me that limits my choice of music so Iāll take it as it comes as long as the music is good.
Not exactly fluff a Tone Poet of Sonic Boom, a āgreatest hitsā performed by some really interesting artists mastered by KG and pressed at RTI which is a double LP, a KG remastered 7" featuring Jackie McClean, Hank Mobley, Cedar Walton, Paul Chambers and Billy Higgins pressed at RTI.
And most interesting a 3 track never before heard live recording featuring Lee Morgan with Ira Sullivan, Nicky Hill, Bobby Timmons, Spanky DeBrest and Philly Joe Jones recorded at the Gate of the Horn, Chicago.
Add to that a pair of high quality lithographs and a really nice booklet and yes undoubtedly it is over priced but I wouldnāt call it filler and fluff.
Iām sorry. I got confused thinking this is a thread for open discourse that includes varying opinions. Didnāt mean to offend you with an opposing view. Iāll step out now and leave you to your thread in peace.
In my opinion - thereās nothing in that box of note which canāt be obtained elsewhere at a sensible price. That jam session might be worth hearing but I donāt need an expensive slab of vinyl for what is likely to be lo fi. I also have no interest in a double album of current BN roster artists playing their favourite Lee Morgan tunes. So - an easy pass for me.
Much more interested in the Lonnie Smith āDrivesā reissue coming up. By the way - the āSonic Boomā in that box isnāt a Tone Poet release.
I hope you get itā¦ heās not had the best reviews as a seller. A couple of people I know whoāve bought from him have had nightmare experiences.
Thatās fair enough but no doubt there are enough people prepared to buy it otherwise BN wouldnāt go to the expense of producing it. Definitely a Luxury purchase for sure or for collectors of everything Lee Morgan at half the price I might be tempted though.
Yes I remember you saying this on another thread and did take it into account but he also has many happy customers Richard Dane being one. Also Iāve paid in a way that does protect me and Iām not expecting it to land at my doorstep right away anyway thanks again for the warning.
I have a weird aversion to organ playing like this in Jazz it always sounds like elevator muzak or from a scene in a late sixties Pink Panther or James Bond film with girls in knee length boots, mini skirts and Alice bands dancing in night clubs with lava lamp lighting.
Peter Somuah - High Life, ACT (2024)
Nice couple of tracks available to stream from this new release a bargain as well at Ā£17.
This is the 50th anniversary release. Just available I think. It has two versions: One a Steven Wilson remix and one called āDavid Singleton Elemental Mixesā. Not sure what they are but I love this album so went for it.
Iām being on the fence here, genuinely, but I had a no arrival on an expensive order, took about 6 months to sort and impossible to contact
YMMV

Really, really really looking forward to the next album from Maribou State - fourth studio album - āHallucinating Loveā, due out 31st January 2025.
Available to pre-order.
They - Maribou State - have just announced a third date at Crystal Palace park in February. ( Having sold out two dates all ready). Wondering what the weather might provide - in mid February - for this outdoor event. Does it matter ( At the same time, wondering if they will tour other concert venues later in 2025).

p.s. quick gig storyā¦
Saw Maribou State a few years back, preC19, at a small local venue, with maybe 600 audience. Honesty, one of the best live gigs we ( me and my best mate and wife) have ever attended. It wasnāt so much the music per se. Although the music was excellent. More to do with the gig crowd audience and the atmosphere. It was so pumped, hyped and happy. Mostly to do with the connection between artists on stage and the crowd, the way they interacted and engaged with an audience. At the time, remember thinking Maribou State have a unique ability - maybe taken from all the club and DJ work they do on the side - to work a crowd. It was just brilliant. Thoroughly recommend this amazing club electronic ensemble as a live experience. Especially if Holly Walker appears, ( as guest vocals).
Mark Kavuma & The Banger Factory - Magnus Opus, Banger Factor Records (2024)
Iām really looking forward to the rather hopefully named Magnus Opus Iāve listened to Mark Kavuma quite a lot since buying his Warriors LP and he is a really talented band leader.
Mastered by Frank Merrit and pressed at GZ Iām hoping the pressing should also be good.
