Grant Green - Gooden’s Corner, Jazz Wax Records (2025)
Even original copies of thisWaxTime reissue from 2015 with the extra Ike Quebec track go for over £50 and original Japanese presses from 1979 will cost you close to £100 if you live in the UK and Music Matters copies £150 plus so I’m going to give this £17 DMM copy a try.
It’s a record I’ve streamed over the past decade and have always wanted a physical copy Direct Metal Masters can be hit and miss but at this price and considering the rarity it’s worth giving this pressing a chance.
I’m undecided on this one. I have most of the material (even the awful Steven Wilson remix), although I would like the Live at The Rainbow set from 15/12/72.
Due for release 7/3. Best price I’ve seen so far is at Burning Shed.
I had an e-mail from HMV this morning advising that there are some Classic Re-issues due out in the next few months;
Creedence Clearwater Revival - All 7 of their Studio Albums are being re-issued on 14th Feb on vinyl and in two colours.
Supertramp - Live in Paris 79 due on 28th February - Triple Album
Jethro Tull - Curious Ruminant - on vinyl and as a collectors boxset with Vinyl, CD and Blu-Ray due on 7th March
Neil Young - Ocean Countryside - 17th March
David Bowie - Young Americans (50th Anniversary) - Picture Disc and Half Speed Vinyl - 7th March
Steely Dan - Katy Lied - 31st January
One addition and apologies as it is not really on thread topic - but the same e-mail advised of a John Mayall retrospective entitled ‘The Second Generation: Live Magic 1968-1993’ it is CD only and comprises of 30 (yes Thirty) CD’s. I like JM but not that much.
Horace Silver - Serenade To a Soul Sister, BN/Classic Series (2025)
Apart from the opening track the forgettable Psychedelic Sally this 1969 release has some excellent music especially the last four tracks. Charles Tolliver, Stanley Turrentine, Bob Cranshaw and Mickey Roker are the backing band on Side 1 on Side 2 which is for me a rare high note in Blue Note’s late 60’s catalogue features Charles Tolliver, Billy Cobham, Bennie Maupin and John Williams the ballad that closes the record Next Time I Fall in Love is worth the asking price alone.
Lou Donaldson Say it Loud is one of his weakest Blue Note efforts. If you’re looking for something to follow on the excellent, Alligator Boogaloo, Mr. Shing-A-Ling and Midnight Creeper, expect to be disappointed. At least stream it before you spend your money. This is a hard pass for me.
I really like Lou Donaldsons output pre 1963 as I’ve mentioned before I have an aversion to the Hammond organ in a Jazz setting just a personal thing as I realise there where and are some excellent organ players.
Funny that you post this. I just got my copy of the February Tone Poets, and the Dizzy Reese Blues In Trinity title features Tubby Hayes on tenor. Great stuff!
If you are in the US there is a very nice Classic Records BG cut of Tubby the Tenor on Discogs for a ridiculous $13.99.
Recorded in '61 with a sextet of Horace Parlan, Clark Terry, Eddie Costa, George Duvvier and Dave Bailey it was originally released in the UK as Tubbs in NY on Fontana.
Vega Trails - Sierra Tracks, Gondawana Records (2025)
Follow up to the very excellent Tremors in Static from 2022 Portico Quartet bassist Milo Fitzpatrick’s side hustle again featuring Mamal Hands saxophonist Jordan Smart this is late night music at it’s best.
