Washer / Dryer Recommendations

You need to ask…? One at 1/3 (*) of the price will still wash & dry.

I used to own a Miele washing machine. After seven years of relatively easy use, the bearing disintegrated. Miele wanted £500 to send an engineer to replace the bearing. I decided on replacement. Owing to mobility issues, I now need a machine with an integrated tumble dryer. The two Miele models were close to £2K. I bought a Bosch. It has had one fault and the company sent an engineer to repair it under the terms of my extended warranty. I found that Bosch’s customer service was excellent. The Bosch is not as well built or as quiet as the Miele but I figured that it wasn’t worth the extra £1200. On their website, Miele claim that they test their washing machines to the equivalent of twelve years use. I pointed out that it was a pity they didn’t test the one that I owned but they wouldn’t budge on doing me an improved deal.

It’s very tricky. Environmentally it has to be better to buy one really good machine that will last for many years, rather than three or four cheap ones that will conk out much sooner. The better machines use less power, less water and are quieter too.

Would you be happy with a £2K version of your mains block’s ?

That makes sense. I just wonder how much of that price is due to the smart facility. Yes I would rather fork out £1600 on something that works and lasts really well rather than £800 on something that is going to be potentially probematic and requires replacement much sooner. Hmmm…

Let me put it to you this way. I would be glad to pay £5K for a washer/dryer if it improved the performance of our hi-fi as well as doing the washing!

Our 1600 spin direct drive Miele (top of the consumer range at the time) was brilliant but went bang with lots of smoke and didn’t turn properly after that. The rubber door seal had also ripped to shreds. Probably not long after the 10 year extended warranty expired but it had been used intensively when the kids were young.

I assume it was some kind of bearing that went.

I don’t think it would have been economical to repair but I do miss many of the features.

Samsung.

Prior to having the Miele for (so far) 19 years we had 4x Zanussi. Couldn’t get one which lasted more than 8 years and spent £800 more than the £1k for the Miele in trying to do so. At the end of the day, as we generally but not always accept with audio, quality costs. It’s such a joy simply having a product that I’ve not had to think about for 2 decades.

I note the comment re: Miele service. We had them out for our 15 year old dishwasher. He tipped us off that if you go through their call centre they will offers fixed price repair. First time cost us £350 via the web. Second time cost £80.

For anybody considering buying a Heat Pump tumble dryer, don’t think that because Miele know how to make washers and conventional dryers, they know how to make heat pump dryers.

A couple of years ago I bought a Samsung heat pump dryer. Tests indicated they perform really well, which is not surprising as they manufacture VRF (air conditioning) systems, so have an in depth knowledge of heat pumps.

Miele on the other hand performed badly, probably because they don’t have in depth knowledge of heat pumps.

With regards to saving energy, the heat pump dryer uses about 250 units less than the conventional dryer it replaced.

We have separate Miele machines. However, we find we use the dryer only occasionally. We do most of the drying the old fashioned way: on a drying rack. So you may wish to consider how often you actually need the dryer and if is worth the investment?

In the USA SpeedQueen is the best for washing and drying. The machines are built here and use mechanical control’s not electrical. The company provides washing equipment to the Navy, Army, Laundromats, colleges and residential customers. Surprisingly the cost is much less than LG,or Samsung,Whirlpool…

Very pleased with my TR-5003 Speed Queen. Does a great job cleaning, much quieter than my previous transmission-based Maytag and built to last!

Interesting.

We have separate washer & dryer. They are stacked in the utility.

Both were top of range Bosch. Both have done good service for 15+ years, but are probably due for replacement.

Criteria for replacement: separates, stackable, upper range.

Suggestions? More Bosch? Or what?

If you are happy with the service you have had from your Bosch appliance’s and they still do stackable, it would make sense to replace like for like.

Yeah, that was my thinking. Just wondering whether there was anything “better”. I don’t know whether stacking is still an option.

Daughter 2 has a Samsung washer. It plays a little tune when it finishes………sigh, but it tickles my wife’s fancy…. (No jokes here please!)

We have a Miele washer and separate dryer, no problems with either, what I do know, when the time comes for their replacement, it will be by another Miele, not sure if they do stackable to be honest.
