Yes, the Files-11 file system used in the RSX-11 operating system on PDP-11s and later on VAX under VAX/VMS maintained file versions, so that versions of a file named login.com
might be saved as login.com;1
, login.com;2
, login.com;3
and so on. Old versions could be deleted using the purge
command. Saved my bacon quite a few times when needing to back out edits and it took a while to get used to not having versioning when I switched to Unix.
Oh, I didnāt know that, cheers
Wrote my first program as a schoolboy in Algol. Solved a set of 10 x 10 linear equations using matrix inversion. We only had one go at running our programs (and no opportunity to debug) on a room-sized machine with less processing power than my watch. Amazingly, it worked first time, an occurrence never since repeated.

Youngster!
Couldnāt they make their renderer OpenHome or UPnP/DLNA compatible? Then either directly, or through BubbleUPnP server, lots of control points become available. Is that really all that difficult/costly?

ALGOL, Digital PDP-11, VAX-VMS,ā¦
Iām not that old afterall !
I learned about about the PDP-11 when I was a student at the EPFL.
I saw it in our computer museum!
Which has now its own webpage : https://www.museebolo.ch/?lang=en
Iām a qualified PDP-11 system administrator, I found the certificate a few years ago during a tidy-up.
I do not know but I am very shocked by what @anon4216120 reported.
I cannot easily test dCS (and Chord, etc.) products in Berlin but I really would have liked to demo a dCS Network Bridge at a certain point.
If it is true that the Bartok only supports gapless playback via the dCS app, I am not interested in dCS products any longer.
Well it was not in the first flush of youth when I used it at work, and yes I seem to remember it was largely exchangeable with VAX/VMS.
It was not long after replaced with Sun Microsystem Unix workstations in my organization I seem to rememberā¦ and I decided to move my career on. ā¦
Cheers
This is my finding and seems to be agreed by dcs on their forum. If you want gapless then itās dcs app and potentially minimserver for correct album playing.
Yes, Simon, there was a great deal of compatibility between PDP-11 and VAX to make the transition easy for existing customers.
I worked at Digital in Engineering through the Eighties and the heyday of VAX/VMS when Digital was the number two computer company behind IBM and had something like 120,000 employees worldwide at the peak. It was a great place to start your career.
The era of the PDP-11 had passed by 1980, having been supplanted by the 32-bit VAX minicomputer and the VMS virtual memory operating system. I remember an exciting day in 1982 when our group got its VAX-11/780 ā one of the most iconic machines of its time. We had to go up to Heathrow to pick up a memory module specially couriered from the US to push the memory capacity to a massive 32MB. This system supported a team of 30 developers and technical writers.
Apologies to the OP about all the Digital nostalgia!
Ditto
tbh I struggled with C++. I persevered for a while but I found the capabilities to override functions just made the code too complex to read.
Possibly canāt say itās a language I ever used or studied.
Just an update on gapless and dcs and bubble etcā¦ I know this isnāt really the right thread but itās a topic that was touched on here.
I mentioned that there were issues with using the dcs app with Asset as the server. Basically album tracks were played in alphabetical rather than track order. I thought it only fair to point out that the issue seems to have now been sorted. Iām guessing itās an Asset fix in the latest full release rather than change to the dcs app. I still think bubble has the better gui and front end but with the Asset compatibility issue fixed one of my main dcs app issues is resolved and Iām now back to using the dcs mosaic app.
This thread is hilarious! When I started streaming my music it was with a SqueezeBox. This was a dozen years ago, it did gapless after a couple of firmware updates. Then moved to a Sonos it always did gapless. Then a PS Audio Dac with their āBridgeā that was a cluster muck that couldnāt do gapless or even keep connected. Used a Modified Sonos for a while, then the original Auralic Aries, into the PS Audio Direct Stream Dac; then lastly a Aurrender into a Devialet D200. In 2020 if your stuff canāt do gapless out of the box it needs to go back in the box!
And Minimserver is excellent and really easy to setup. Thereās an easy to understand setup and user guide, a great support forum and Simon Nash can usually be called upon if the forum canāt help.
