I want one
Your dad might just get you one if you’re good.
Tangential this, however I’ve just seen my son’s driving lessons car for the first time. Being a bit wary of the biz as his first instructor was very obviously a rogue, I’ve just checked the instructor’s car and the MOT ran out in November…
Clearly I’ll step out for a chat when he gets back, does anyone know if no MOT invalidates learner insurance etc.? T’internet seems to give as many no’s and yesses!
Having no MOT when for a car that is on the road is illegal. Being on the road illegally means that any insurance for that car will be invalid because no insurance company can insure an illegal car.
In Northern Ireland MoT tests are undertaken by the State in dedicated testing centres. Due to a combination of factors the waiting time for an MoT had grown to greater than 6 months. The PSNI have agreed that they will take no action against anyone who’s MoT has expired so long as they have a booking for a test and the car is in serviceable condition. Likewise the ABI have stated that they will honour car insurance in the same circumstances.
Of course those lovely people at DVLA are having none of this and if your car Tax is due for renewal and you can’t get an MoT appointment you’re stuffed. Joined up government.
After many years of this worsening backlog I believe that they now automatically issue a MoT certificate for all vehicles as they reach their 4th anniversary of first registration, the point at which a test would normally be due.
Willy.
The part of the insurance cover that covers third parties is not mutable.
No MoT (if one is required) is a non-endorsable offence but you may get a fixed penalty, or worse if the vehicle is found to be dangerous - bald tyres, defective brakes etc.
Well the last mot in Nov ‘23 was a pass but had an advisory on the brakes. I suspect he knows the car wouldn’t pass an mot without some expenditure on brakes for an 11yo Yaris.
Brakes are a cheap fix in relative terms, and it could just be pad wear levels and/or brake disc thickness – and many people wait until these are flagged within an MoT before addressing them.
Yeah and not expensive for a Yaris. Either way, no mot so he has my son driving a car that’s on the road illegally.
I suspect not for much longer. There’s the technicality bit about having a current MOT certificate and there’s the general attitude thing which IMHO sits behind that. This guy has a career centred on providing driving lessons to paying customers. The Yaris is his tool of trade. It should be maintained to tip top standard. If he can’t be bothered sorting out an MOT certificate, what else is he not bothered about?
I would suggest Jamiewednesday, there is little to talk about with him. Simply find a new instructor for your son and leave well alone.
Peter
Oh for sure, it’s over.
I was lucky, when I had lessons in the 70s the cars were quite new, as they didn’t last very long back then. Lol.
A Jaguar XE S (one of these):
A few years old and have put nearly 70K miles on it but the most comfortable car I’ve had so far and because it’s the slightly silly version Jaguar basically engine-swapped the 380hp supercharged V6 into from the F-type before they started making these all 4cyl it looks quite ordinary but a bit of ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ for when it’s a nice day on the B-roads. Absolutely love it. Next car will probably be electric as that seems to be the way of things are going…
checked and you are correct
It’s very strange after about 40 years of filling up at a petrol station to now be charging at home, but I’m gradually getting used to it.
Soon get used to it Nigel. You also soon loose any range anxiety you may have. I’ve done very long journeys in my electric car with no range worries.
Do I prefer electric over ICE, probably not but it something we’ll probably all need to adopt at some point in the not so distant future.
Give it a year or so and you will mot remember what to do if you have to go to a filling station.
Agreed, it’s uncommon not to find oneself blinded several times during a night time trip these days.
