On my third listening and it certainly rewards perseverance. I’m liking it a lot after initially being uncertain.
Daniel Lanois - Acadie
The playing and production on this album is just stunning.
I saw Daniel Lanois at the Royal Festival Hall when he was touring this album. For an encore he dragged a very reluctant Eno from the audience to do a storming version of the Velvet Underground’s Waiting For The Man.
I love his playing. The way he builds a solo is just so thoughtful, not just lots of notes fast, but structure, progression. His lad’s pretty good, too.
Yes, the family seems to be very musical, starting with Moon and her appearance in 1982’s “Ship Arriving Too Late to Save A Drowning Witch”. Pure Zappa irreverent social crítique.
I saw the tour that Ahmed put together a few years ago, with the hologram. The musicians were terrific (Ray White, Scott Thunes, Joe Travers and others), but Ahmed’s contribution, the hologram and the lights/ graphics, didn’t do it for me. I closed my eyes and just listened. Great music.
I saw Zappa at his last concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London back in the late 80s and I rather keep the memory alive than seeing some put up tribute band which I never liked anyway. But that’s just me and if others enjoy it good for them.
If memory serves correctly, Zappa’s last shows at Hammersmith were in 1984. His final London shows were at Wembley Arena in 1987 during the ‘Broadway The Hard Way Tour’.
And you’re correct, my dear friend. I did say it was the last concert of him I saw at the odeon in London, not his last concert in London.
